{"id":3275,"date":"2012-01-18T14:18:11","date_gmt":"2012-01-18T14:18:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=3275"},"modified":"2012-01-18T14:20:17","modified_gmt":"2012-01-18T14:20:17","slug":"cellphone-makers-can-expect-poor-reception-in-2012","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/mobile\/3275\/cellphone-makers-can-expect-poor-reception-in-2012\/","title":{"rendered":"Cellphone makers can expect poor reception in 2012"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Cellphone makers are set to struggle with slow sales growth this year as a weaker global economy discourages consumers from replacing older handsets.<\/p>\n<p>Fourth-quarter results are likely to show the slowdown under way. <a title=\"Company Information\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/342717-Apple-inc\" target=\"_blank\">Apple<\/a>&#8216;s long-awaited iPhone 4S and <a title=\"Company Information\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/333656-Samsung\" target=\"_blank\">Samsung Electronics<\/a>&#8216; new, broad offering were likely the exceptions in an otherwise lackluster Christmas holiday season.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The blowout quarter that Apple will report will show they are still the one to beat, while in the Android (operating system) camp &#8230; only a strong brand like Samsung can stand out,&#8221; said Gartner analyst Carolina Milanesi.<\/p>\n<p>Apple, ousted as the world&#8217;s top smartphone maker by Samsung in the third quarter, could regain the No. 1 spot as consumers rush to buy the latest iPhone. It had been 16 months since the previous model went on sale.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Company Information\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/359638-Sony-Ericsson\" target=\"_blank\">Sony Ericsson<\/a> kicks off the cellphone industry&#8217;s reporting season on Thursday, and analysts expect it to report quarterly sales fell 6 percent from a year earlier to 10.5 million phones.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Company Information\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/347942-Sony\" target=\"_blank\">Sony <\/a>agreed to buy out Ericsson&#8217;s stake in the venture last October.<\/p>\n<p>Taiwan&#8217;s <a title=\"Company Information\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/340335-HTC-Corp\" target=\"_blank\">HTC<\/a>, <a title=\"Company Information\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/342709-BlackBerry\" target=\"_blank\">BlackBerry<\/a> maker <a title=\"Company Information\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/313525-Research-in-Motion-%28RIM%29\" target=\"_blank\">Research In Motion<\/a> and <a title=\"Company Information\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/211039-Motorola\" target=\"_blank\">Motorola<\/a> Mobility have warned of weak sales in the holiday season, a key period when many consumers replace their models.<strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Price erosion<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Vendors are expected to report sales of around 142 million smartphones in the October-December quarter, up 42 percent from a year ago, according to a Reuters poll. But analysts said not everyone benefited.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We expect smartphone demand to have remained robust in the fourth quarter, but price erosion is intensifying.
