{"id":328221,"date":"2019-07-09T16:30:14","date_gmt":"2019-07-09T14:30:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=328221"},"modified":"2019-07-09T16:23:33","modified_gmt":"2019-07-09T14:23:33","slug":"watch-south-african-highway-cameras-used-to-track-hijackers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/technology\/328221\/watch-south-african-highway-cameras-used-to-track-hijackers\/","title":{"rendered":"Watch: South African highway cameras used to track hijackers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The South African National Roads Agency (Sanral) has posted a video showing how it uses cameras installed along the country&#8217;s highways to track criminals.<\/p>\n<p>In a recent incident, hijackers were spotted on\u00a0cameras operated by the Sanral Traffic Management Centre and arrested by police officials within 13 minutes after the hijacking occurred near the London Road exit on the N3.<\/p>\n<p>Sanral said that the cameras\u00a0used form part of Sanral&#8217;s Freeway Management System (FMS) used to manage traffic flow and incidents on strategic national roads.<\/p>\n<p>Spokesperson, Vusi Mona, said that one of the supervisors on duty at the TMC alerted the Joburg Metro Police officials \u2013 also stationed at the centre \u2013 of suspicious activity next to the road.<\/p>\n<p>This was picked\u00a0up from the closed-circuit television cameras\u00a0used to monitor major roads in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape, he said.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Two armed hijackers caught by Sanral cameras.
