{"id":328593,"date":"2019-07-11T11:57:48","date_gmt":"2019-07-11T09:57:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=328593"},"modified":"2019-07-11T11:57:48","modified_gmt":"2019-07-11T09:57:48","slug":"this-is-when-south-africas-new-parental-leave-laws-will-be-ready-to-launch","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business\/328593\/this-is-when-south-africas-new-parental-leave-laws-will-be-ready-to-launch\/","title":{"rendered":"This is when South Africa&#8217;s new parental leave laws will be ready to launch"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Department of Labour plans to introduce South Africa&#8217;s new leave laws in phases, starting with parental benefits at the end of July.<\/p>\n<p>In November 2018, president Cyril Ramaphosa signed the Labour Laws Amendment Bill into law.<\/p>\n<p>However, businesses were left confused as the new rules surrounding paternity and adoptive leave were delayed to allow for UIF integration.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to BusinessTech, acting department spokesperson Makhosonke Buthelezi said that this decision was made to accommodate the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We had to reconfigure the system to consider the benefits of all these new additions and make sure that all of the benefits and dates line up,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>He added that planned dates for system readiness are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Parental benefits &#8211; 31 July 2019<\/li>\n<li>Adoption benefits &#8211; 11 October 2019<\/li>\n<li>Commissioning parental benefits &#8211; 20 December 2019<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>While the UIF systems will be ready by these dates, Buthelezi indicated that the actual implementation of the changes <strong>might be delayed<\/strong> as the rules also need to be officially enacted by lawmakers.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Once the UIF is ready at a system-level and the legislation has been approved, the new amendments will officially be in effect,&#8221; he said,<\/p>\n<p>The Labour Laws Amendment Act creates parental leave, adoption leave and commissioning parental leave to employees as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>An employee, who is a parent of a child, is entitled to ten consecutive days of parental leave;<\/li>\n<li>An employee, who is an adoptive parent of a child below the age of two, is entitled to:\n<ul>\n<li>Adoption leave of at least ten consecutive weeks; or<\/li>\n<li>At least ten consecutive days of parental leave.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Read:<a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business\/328529\/big-employment-equity-shake-up-as-government-looks-to-speed-up-transformation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Big employment equity shake-up as government looks to speed up transformation<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Department of Labour plans to introduce South Africa&#8217;s new leave laws in phases.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":10,"featured_media":84477,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[9872],"tags":[26],"class_list":["post-328593","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-business","tag-headline"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/328593","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/10"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=328593"}],"version-history":[{"count":8,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/328593\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":328621,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/328593\/revisions\/328621"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/84477"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=328593"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=328593"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=328593"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
