{"id":330885,"date":"2019-07-23T16:27:35","date_gmt":"2019-07-23T14:27:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=330885"},"modified":"2019-07-24T15:03:42","modified_gmt":"2019-07-24T13:03:42","slug":"south-african-private-schools-that-are-cheaper-than-public-schools","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/finance\/330885\/south-african-private-schools-that-are-cheaper-than-public-schools\/","title":{"rendered":"South African private schools that are cheaper than public schools"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There is a growing demand for private schools that are providing private school quality education at a price point comparable to many government schools.<\/p>\n<p>This is according to co-founder of Spark Schools, Stacey Brewer, who said that parents traditionally have had to either had to bite the bullet to pay for private schooling or take their chances in a government schooling system that\u2019s creaking at the seams.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re deliberately positioned at the lower end of the cost curve in private education, because we want to create a more inclusive education landscape and disrupt the accepted norm that private schools are only for an elite few,\u201d said Brewer.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Fees for 2020 will be <strong>R25,500 for primary school<\/strong> children and <strong>R33,000 per high school<\/strong> child \u2013 without receiving a cent in subsidies from government,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The cost of schooling<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Cost-of-schooling.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-293340 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Cost-of-schooling.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1067\" height=\"692\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Cost-of-schooling.jpg 1067w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Cost-of-schooling-300x195.jpg 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Cost-of-schooling-768x498.jpg 768w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Cost-of-schooling-1024x664.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1067px) 100vw, 1067px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A January 2019 <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/finance\/293330\/how-much-it-will-cost-to-send-your-kids-to-school-and-university-over-the-next-18-years-in-south-africa-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">report<\/a> <\/strong>by Old Mutual found that you can now expect to pay millions of rands for a private school education in South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf your child starts grade R in 2019 you can expect to pay between\u00a0<strong>R1,400,000 <\/strong>and <strong>R3,400,000, <\/strong>for public or private education respectively, over their school career,\u201d said\u00a0Marius Pretorius, head of marketing: retail savings and income solutions at Old Mutual Personal Finance.<\/p>\n<p>This amount includes a primary school, high school and three-year university qualification, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe truth of the matter is that education is expensive. If you\u2019ve saved any money and your child is entering a public primary or high school in 2019 you can expect to pay on average about R37,000 this year, while a private primary school and private high school will set you back R92,400 and R148,300, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen it comes to university education, parents can expect to pay R64,200 in 2019, on average,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The competition<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Spark is not the only player in this market with a number of other competitors also promising a private school education for slightly more than government school fees.<\/p>\n<p>Below is an overview of the other big players in the space and how much it costs to send a child to these schools.<\/p>\n<p><strong>AdvTech<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Waterfall.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-329571\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Waterfall.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"605\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Waterfall.png 640w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Waterfall-300x202.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In July 2019 listed education group <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business\/329567\/advtech-targets-affordable-mid-fee-private-schools-in-south-africa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AdvTech<\/a> <\/strong>said that it was growing its offering in the \u2018mid-fee schools\u2019 sector through its &#8216;Pinnacle&#8217; brand.<\/p>\n<p>Fees at these schools can vary greatly depending on the area and the grades that a student is in.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Pricing at\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rynfieldcollege.co.za\/\">Pinnacle College Rynfield<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0starts at R35,000 a year for Grade 000, rising to R66,000 for Grades 11- 12.<\/li>\n<li>Similarly, parents at\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/irp-cdn.multiscreensite.com\/4df63a90\/files\/uploaded\/Fee%20Structure.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pinnacle College Copperleaf<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>can expect to pay from R40,288 for Grade 00 up to R57,769 for Grades 8-9.<\/li>\n<li>On the more expensive side, pricing starts at R57,000 for Grade 000 at\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pinnaclecolleges.co.za\/waterfall\">Pinnacle College Waterfall\u00a0<\/a><\/strong>\u2013 rising to R85,500 for Grade 9 students.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Pembury\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/PLG.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-244531\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/PLG.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"675\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/PLG.jpg 725w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/PLG-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Another listed education group Pembury said that its PLG Schools aim to bridge the financial gap between government school fees and the elite Independent School fees, bringing the benefits of independent school learning to more young people.<\/p>\n<p>It currently boasts more than ten schools across Gauteng, the North West and Limpopo, with facilities for students from Grade R through to matric.<\/p>\n<p>Each school has vastly different <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.plgschools.co.za\/fees\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fees<\/a> <\/strong>depending on the area and the grades that a student is in.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Pricing at PLG Willow View Academy starts at\u00a0 <strong>R28,600 for Grade R, <\/strong>rising to<strong> R56,560 for Grades 11-12<\/strong>;<\/li>\n<li>Pricing at PLG Mellow Oaks Academy starts at <strong>R33,000 for Grade R<\/strong> and rises to <strong>R57,200 for Grades 8 &#8211;
