{"id":331469,"date":"2019-07-26T08:26:48","date_gmt":"2019-07-26T06:26:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=331469"},"modified":"2019-07-26T10:01:31","modified_gmt":"2019-07-26T08:01:31","slug":"south-african-schools-set-for-major-shake-up-and-experts-are-worried","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/331469\/south-african-schools-set-for-major-shake-up-and-experts-are-worried\/","title":{"rendered":"South African schools set for major shake-up &#8211; and experts are worried"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Education analysts have warned that the plan to make it impossible for struggling foundation phase learners to fail may have dire consequences for the country&#8217;s education system.<\/p>\n<p>In her 2018\/2019 budget <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.za\/speeches\/minister-angie-motshekga-basic-education-dept-budget-vote-201819-9-may-2018-0000\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">speech<\/a><\/strong>, Basic Education minister Angie Motshekga said that one of her key focuses for the upcoming year was a review of the country\u2019s progression and promotion policies \u2013 especially in the lower grades.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA number of education experts have opined on this matter, and the overwhelming message is that <strong>it does not make any educational sense to make young children aged six to ten years, repeat a grade<\/strong>,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccording to the experts, the children who repeat, on the whole, gain absolutely nothing.
