{"id":331843,"date":"2019-07-29T10:36:48","date_gmt":"2019-07-29T08:36:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=331843"},"modified":"2019-07-29T10:36:48","modified_gmt":"2019-07-29T08:36:48","slug":"population-in-south-africa-now-at-58-8-million","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/331843\/population-in-south-africa-now-at-58-8-million\/","title":{"rendered":"Population in South Africa now at 58.8 million"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For 2019, Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) estimates the mid-year population at 58.78 million.<\/p>\n<p>Gauteng comprises the largest share of the population, with approximately 15.2 million people (25.8%) living in this province.<\/p>\n<p>KwaZulu-Natal is the province with the second largest population, with an estimated 11.3 million people (19.2%).<\/p>\n<p>With a population of approximately 1.26 million people (2.2%), Northern Cape remains the province with the smallest share of the population.<\/p>\n<p>The black South African population is in the majority (47.4 million) and constitutes approximately 81% of the total South African population. The white population is estimated at 4.7 million, the coloured population at 5.2 million and the Indian\/Asian population at 1.5 million.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Population-group.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-331865\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Population-group.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"828\" height=\"276\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Population-group.png 828w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Population-group-300x100.png 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Population-group-768x256.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 828px) 100vw, 828px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Population-estimates.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-331861\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Population-estimates.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"510\" height=\"386\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Population-estimates.png 510w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Population-estimates-300x227.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 510px) 100vw, 510px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Migration<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to Stats SA&#8217;s data, while the rising population numbers are due to rising fertility numbers and a larger ageing population, South Africa is also estimated to see a net addition of around 1 million foreign nationals in the 2016 to 2021 period.<\/p>\n<p>Gauteng, the Western Cape and Limpopo are the provinces where most of these international migrants will settle &#8211; with over half a million landing in Gauteng.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Migration.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-331859\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Migration.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1244\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Migration.png 1244w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Migration-300x87.png 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Migration-768x222.png 768w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Migration-1024x296.png 1024w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Migration-1200x347.png 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1244px) 100vw, 1244px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Provincial populations are also affected by internal migration &#8211; or &#8216;semigration&#8217; &#8211; where Gauteng and the Western Cape are the largest recipients on in-migrants, the stats group said.<\/p>\n<p>Over the period, Gauteng is expected to see a net addition of 1.07 million people moving into the province, while the Western Cape will receive 316,000 people.<\/p>\n<p>The Eastern Cape and Gauteng experienced the largest number of outflow of migrants.
