Hacktivist group Anonymous recently claimed to have breached the security of two Anglo American websites \u2013 angloplatinum.com and angloplatinum.co.za \u2013 and published sensitive information online.<\/p>\n
In a post on the \u201cOperation Green Rights\u201d blog, the group claimed that Anglo American\u2019s action against a fight for indigenous people and polluting the environment are behind this hacking.<\/p>\n
Numerous files, which contain usernames and passwords and investor names with personal details, were published online.<\/p>\n
Anglo American\u2019s media manager, Mpumi Sithole said that they take all apparent breaches of data security very seriously, and their IT security team have carried out a thorough investigation.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt appears the breach took place at a third party host server. Information from a number of companies\u2019 websites was accessed,\u201d said Sithole.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe information related to Anglo American Platinum was more than 8 years old and related to legacy website files that were no longer in use. We have taken action to prevent such a breach recurring.\u201d<\/p>\n
