Telkom<\/a>\u2019s decision to sponsor the PSL to the tune of R100 million over 5 years amidst its decision to announce voluntary retrenchment packages for staff to cut costs is drawing criticism from some quarters.<\/p>\n

The Sunday Times reported that the PSL sponsorship decision caused anger internally, but Telkom is defending the decision.<\/p>\n

The newspaper reported that Telkom said in an internal Q&A to staff that sponsorships allow the company to reach a large audience of potential customers, which translates into commercial benefits for the company.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople misconstrue sponsorships as charity money. Sponsorship of the PSL delivers an audience in a competitive environment,\u201d Telkom\u2019s Dominic Ntsele is quoted as saying.<\/p>\n

Telkom is also sponsoring other sporting events like the PGA golf championship and the Telkom Knock Out Cup.<\/p>\n
