{"id":34068,"date":"2013-03-20T17:04:04","date_gmt":"2013-03-20T15:04:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=34068"},"modified":"2013-03-22T08:51:08","modified_gmt":"2013-03-22T06:51:08","slug":"telkom-not-firing-13000-people","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/telecommunications\/34068\/telkom-not-firing-13000-people\/","title":{"rendered":"Telkom not firing 13,000 people"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a title=\"Telkom\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1637-Telkom\">Telkom<\/a> has dismissed speculation that it is to retrench up to 13,000 employees after it recently reporting that there was an\u00a0urgent need to address its human capital requirements.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Telkom is aware of speculation regarding retrenchment of some 13 000 employees and wishes to place it on record that no such decision has been taken.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The company recently announced voluntary separation and voluntary early retirement process to its employees which emphasised that the decision to apply for a package is at the sole discretion of every employee,&#8221; it said in a statement on Wednesday (20 March).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Telkom announced on 11 March that management and bargaining unit staff would be afforded the opportunity of applying for voluntary severance packages (VSPs) and early retirement packages (VERPs) from 15 March 2013 until 31 August 2013.<\/p>\n<p>The firm said that this followed\u00a0formal consultation with internal and external stakeholders, including the three recognised trade unions: Communication Workers Union (<a title=\"CWU\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/3506-CWU-Communication-Workers-Union\">CWU<\/a>), South African Communication Union (SACU) and Solidarity<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;No employee is obligated to invoke this offer. Importantly, this is not a Section 189 process in disguise and this is not the first time Telkom has made this offer available to all categories of employees.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Furthermore the outcome of this process will not be assessed on the reduction of the number of employees, but on the overall impact of the company\u2019s cost structure.
