{"id":342099,"date":"2019-09-19T11:47:27","date_gmt":"2019-09-19T09:47:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=342099"},"modified":"2019-09-19T13:18:32","modified_gmt":"2019-09-19T11:18:32","slug":"south-africa-on-the-brink-of-major-load-shedding-da","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/energy\/342099\/south-africa-on-the-brink-of-major-load-shedding-da\/","title":{"rendered":"South Africa on the brink of major load shedding: DA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The DA says there is a strong possibility of rolling blackouts during September and October 2019.<\/p>\n<p>In a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.da.org.za\/2019\/09\/da-calls-on-eskom-to-come-clean-about-looming-rolling-blackouts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">statement<\/a> <\/strong>on Thursday (19 September), the party said it has received reliable information about the potential blackouts.<\/p>\n<p>It further called on Eskom chairperson Jabu Mabuza to outline the threat of these blackouts and the potential impact on the country.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The impact of rolling blackouts which made an unwelcome appearance earlier this year, was a primary contributor to a 3.2% contraction of the economy in the first quarter \u2013 the largest contraction in 10 years,&#8221; it said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Eskom has kept the country\u2019s economy down on its knees \u2013 with unacceptably high levels of unemployment and job losses due to rolling blackouts.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Another episode of rolling blackouts would be a major blow for South Africans, who bear the effects of abject poverty, and unemployment.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>While no load shedding is expected over summer, the risk remains as the system is still tight and vulnerable, Eskom said in an emailed statement to BusinessTech.<\/p>\n<p>It said that it will provide an update should there be significant changes on the power system.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Load-shedding<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At the end of August 2019, the <a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/energy\/336021\/south-africa-is-on-the-brink-of-load-shedding-eskom\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>power utility<\/strong><\/a> said that an acceleration in economic growth in South Africa could trigger power cuts.<\/p>\n<p>The energy availability of Eskom\u2019s generation fleet is supposed to be as high as 80%, but is currently as low as 69%, and even a 0.1% rise in gross domestic product could result in outages, Nelisiwe Magubane, an Eskom board member said.<\/p>\n<p>The state-owned utility, which supplies about 95% of South Africa\u2019s power, has a mountain of debt and is reliant on government bailouts to remain solvent.<\/p>\n<p>It is also contending with operational issues \u2013 most of its power stations are nearing retirement age and haven\u2019t been properly maintained, while the construction of two new plants are running years behind schedule and way over budget.<\/p>\n<p>The country has experienced intermittent power outages \u2013 known locally as load shedding \u2013 since late 2005, a measure Eskom said was needed to prevent the national grid from collapsing.<\/p>\n<p>Outages have eased over recent months largely due to the poor performance of the economy \u2013 gross domestic product slumped an annualised 3.2% in the first quarter, the biggest contraction in a decade.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Read: <a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/energy\/340069\/billions-more-in-government-funding-is-the-only-option-left-for-eskom\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Billions more in government funding is the only option left for Eskom<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The DA says there is a strong possibility of rolling blackouts during September and October 2019.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":10,"featured_media":301154,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[9874],"tags":[26],"class_list":["post-342099","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-energy","tag-headline"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/342099","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/10"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=342099"}],"version-history":[{"count":6,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/342099\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":342169,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/342099\/revisions\/342169"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/301154"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=342099"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=342099"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=342099"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
