{"id":34231,"date":"2013-03-25T08:57:51","date_gmt":"2013-03-25T06:57:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=34231"},"modified":"2013-03-25T09:16:28","modified_gmt":"2013-03-25T07:16:28","slug":"cisco-fined-for-patent-fraud","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/hardware\/34231\/cisco-fined-for-patent-fraud\/","title":{"rendered":"Cisco fined for patent fraud"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Cisco Systems Inc must pay $70 million in damages to patent licenser XpertUniverse Inc for fraudulently obtaining technology developed by the New York company, a jury found on Friday, according to court filings.<\/p>\n<p>The jury also found that Cisco violated two XpertUniverse patents, and awarded an additional $34,000 in damages on those claims.<\/p>\n<p>Cisco, the world&#8217;s largest manufacturer of networking equipment, said it would appeal if the judge leaves the jury verdict intact.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are surprised and extremely disappointed with the jury&#8217;s verdict,&#8221; Cisco said in an emailed statement after the verdict was delivered in a Delaware federal court.<\/p>\n<p>XpertUniverse claimed in the lawsuit that San Jose, California-based Cisco&#8217;s &#8220;Expert on Demand&#8221; software platform was based on software that XpertUniverse developed.<\/p>\n<p>XpertUniverse said Cisco violated a non-disclosure agreement it had signed and filed for patents on technology developed by XpertUniverse.
