{"id":34246,"date":"2013-03-25T09:22:41","date_gmt":"2013-03-25T07:22:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=34246"},"modified":"2013-03-25T09:24:45","modified_gmt":"2013-03-25T07:24:45","slug":"isps-hit-by-seacom-eassy-cable-break","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/trending\/34246\/isps-hit-by-seacom-eassy-cable-break\/","title":{"rendered":"ISPs hit by Seacom, Eassy cable break"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Multiple submarine cable systems across Africa, the Middle East and Asia are affected by cable breaks which are believed to have been caused by a large vessel dragging its anchor across the sea bed.<\/p>\n<p>Two cable systems serving South Africa \u2013 Seacom and Eassy \u2013 have been affected by the cable breaks in the Mediterranean Sea.<\/p>\n<p>Seacom CEO Mark Simpson said on Saturday that the company continues to work to restore transmission and getting restoration services turned on.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever, this process is proving much more complex and taking longer than we were initially told by our suppliers and would have expected,\u201d Simpson said.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_9865\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Afrihost.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9865\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9865\" alt=\"Afrihost\" src=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Afrihost.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Afrihost.jpg 600w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Afrihost-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-9865\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Afrihost<\/p><\/div>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Local ADSL providers give feedback<\/h3>\n<p>Many South African ADSL service providers use Seacom and Eassy for international connectivity, and many local broadband users continue to complain about slow international throughput.<\/p>\n<p>Most service providers have already re-routed traffic to alleviate the effects of the cable breaks, but capacity limitations may influence the performance of some subscribers.<br \/>\nAfrihost<\/p>\n<p>Afrihost director Greg Payne said that the Seacom issues are not affecting Afrihost\u2019s network at all as they only use Seacom as a backup.<\/p>\n<p>However, Afrihost uses the Eassy cable which forced the ISP to re-route traffic over WACS while the circuit is down.<\/p>\n<p>Afrihost CEO Gian Visser added that there has been a phenomenal take up of the monthly \u2018free GB offer\u2019 over the last few days. \u201cPeople seem to be using it as a backup measure if their ISP has problems,\u201d said Visser.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_30481\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/derek-hershaw.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30481\" class=\"size-full wp-image-30481\" alt=\"Derek Hershaw - MWEB\" src=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/derek-hershaw.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/derek-hershaw.jpg 600w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/derek-hershaw-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-30481\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Derek Hershaw<\/p><\/div>\n<p>MWEB ISP Derek Hershaw said that the ISP has capacity on the WACS cable, but with Seacom completely down, this only covers about 45% of the total requirement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo most services are degraded to some extent and the particularly heavy protocols like P2P are not available at all,\u201d said Hershaw.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re in discussions with various operators to get full restoration bandwidth until the Seacom cable can be repaired.
