{"id":342539,"date":"2019-09-23T08:52:53","date_gmt":"2019-09-23T06:52:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=342539"},"modified":"2019-09-23T08:52:53","modified_gmt":"2019-09-23T06:52:53","slug":"why-a-new-afrikaans-only-university-is-a-bad-idea-lesufi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/342539\/why-a-new-afrikaans-only-university-is-a-bad-idea-lesufi\/","title":{"rendered":"Why a new Afrikaans-only university is a bad idea: Lesufi"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi has lambasted Solidarity&#8217;s plans to open an Afrikaans-only university.<\/p>\n<p>In an opinion piece for <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iol.co.za\/news\/opinion\/afrikaans-university-is-a-bad-idea-33459231\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">IOL<\/a><\/strong>, Lesufi claimed that the Afrikaans language was being &#8216;hijacked&#8217; by the trade union to &#8216;conceal a hatred of a democratic South Africa&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is a pity that even under a democratic state, we are still being insulted and the overwhelming majority of our people, still live in squalor, not out of their own making but because of the historic injustices of apartheid education,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is those living in informal settlements and rural areas without skills that need this university.
