{"id":34277,"date":"2013-03-26T00:08:23","date_gmt":"2013-03-25T22:08:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=34277"},"modified":"2013-03-26T08:43:13","modified_gmt":"2013-03-26T06:43:13","slug":"seacom-outage-how-business-is-affected","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/trending\/34277\/seacom-outage-how-business-is-affected\/","title":{"rendered":"Seacom outage: how business is affected"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A number of business ADSL ISPs have responded to queries relating to how the <a title=\"Seacom\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1983-Seacom\">Seacom<\/a> and <a title=\"Eassy\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1984-EASSy-Eastern-Africa-Submarine-Cable-System\">Eassy<\/a> outages have affected their business customers.<\/p>\n<p>Multiple submarine cable systems across Africa, the Middle East and Asia are being affected by cable breaks which are believed to have been caused by a large vessel dragging its anchor across the sea bed off the coast of Egypt.<\/p>\n<p>Two cable systems serving South Africa \u2013 Seacom and Eassy \u2013 have been hit by the cable breaks in the Mediterranean Sea.<\/p>\n<p>Seacom CEO <a title=\"Mark Simpson\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/3241-Mark-Simpson\">Mark Simpson<\/a> said on Saturday (23 March 2013) that the company is continuing to work on restoring transmission and getting restoration services turned on.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever, this process is proving much more complex and taking longer than we were initially told by our suppliers and would have expected,\u201d Simpson said.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_34183\" style=\"width: 609px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Seacom-cable-map-23-March-2013.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34183\" class=\"size-full wp-image-34183\" title=\"Seacom cable map\" alt=\"Seacom cable map 23 March 2013\" src=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Seacom-cable-map-23-March-2013.jpg\" width=\"599\" height=\"511\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-34183\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Seacom cable map<\/p><\/div>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Impact on business ADSL<\/h3>\n<p><a title=\"Vox Telecom\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1952-Vox-Telecom\"><strong>Vox Telecom<\/strong><\/a> spokesperson <a title=\"Clayton Timcke\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/2227-Clayton-Timcke\">Clayton Timcke<\/a> said that the ISP is not affected by the Eassy and Seacom\u2019s problems as it has full international redundancy.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Internet Solutions\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/2038-Internet-Solutions\"><strong>Internet Solutions<\/strong><\/a> said that there will be a minimal impact on its network for business customers, saying that a rise in latency would be the most obvious effect.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;International DSL traffic has been diverted through the alternative international cable systems, predominantly <a title=\"SAT3\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1981-Sat-3-wasc\">SAT3<\/a> and <a title=\"WACS\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1985-WACS-West-Africa-Cable-System\">WACS<\/a>,&#8221; Internet Solutions said.<\/p>\n<p>The small increase in international latency is the extent to which the IS user base has been impacted by the Seacom outage.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;IS will continue to monitor the DSL network to ensure that any negative impact on the user experience is mitigated as far as possible,&#8221; it said.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Web Africa\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1820-Web-Africa\"><strong>Web Africa<\/strong><\/a> said that there was some impact on its international link on Friday when its Seacom capacity failed over to SAT3, &#8220;but we have provisioned additional capacity over WACS to alleviate any load on the network,&#8221; said Web Africa COO, <a title=\"Rupert Bryant\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/5593-Rupert-Bryant\">Rupert Bryant<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Cybersmart\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1953-Cybersmart\"><strong>Cybersmart<\/strong><\/a> CEO <a title=\"Laurie Fialkov\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1955-Laurie-Fialkov\">Laurie Fialkov<\/a> said that business customers would see very little difference in their services.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We were one of the first to take capacity on Seacom and we got hit hard with the original set of outages, since then we have taken steps to mitigate a single cable system failure,&#8221; Given that we have had more outages on Seacom than the other cable system, we have a weighting of 20% seacom, 40% wacs and 40% sat-3,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In summary, we are impacted, but not that severely, we have compensated by reducing p2p and software update throughput during business hours.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Vodacom\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1639-Vodacom\"><strong>Vodacom<\/strong><\/a> said it has been completely unaffected by the Seacom outage.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Mweb Business\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/7501-MWEB-Business\"><strong>Mweb Business<\/strong><\/a> didn&#8217;t return comment by time of publishing, but it was previously reported that the Mweb consumer ISP network was heavily hit by the Seacom downtime.<\/p>\n<p>Mweb ISP <a title=\"Derek Hershaw\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1818-Derek-Hershaw\">Derek Hershaw<\/a> said that the ISP has capacity on the WACS cable, but with Seacom completely down, this only covers about 45% of the total requirement.<\/p>\n<p>According to a tweet from <a title=\"Mweb\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1817-Mweb\"><strong>Mweb<\/strong><\/a>, early indications are that it may take up to two weeks to repair the break and restore the cables to full capacity.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_34278\" style=\"width: 484px\" class=\"wp-caption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Seacom downtime tweet<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a title=\"Afrihost\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1822-Afrihost\"><strong>Afrihost<\/strong><\/a> hadn&#8217;t responded to queries by the time of publishing, however Afrihost director <a title=\"Greg Payne\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1823-Greg-Payne\">Greg Payne<\/a> said that the Seacom issues are not affecting Afrihost\u2019s network at all (hence its business network included) as they only use Seacom as a backup.<\/p>\n<p>However, Afrihost uses the
