{"id":346158,"date":"2019-10-14T08:24:24","date_gmt":"2019-10-14T06:24:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=346158"},"modified":"2019-10-14T08:34:43","modified_gmt":"2019-10-14T06:34:43","slug":"south-africas-controversial-birth-certificate-rule-to-be-scrapped","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/lifestyle\/346158\/south-africas-controversial-birth-certificate-rule-to-be-scrapped\/","title":{"rendered":"South Africa&#8217;s controversial birth certificate rule to be scrapped"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Department of Home Affairs will scrap its controversial birth certificate rules for travellers.<\/p>\n<p>The regulation requires all people travelling with minors (under the age of 18) to produce an unabridged birth certificate, and a letter of parental consent if the child is not travelling with both parents, when departing from and arriving in South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking in a radio <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.moneyweb.co.za\/news\/south-africa\/tourism-wins-govt-to-abolish-unabridged-birth-certificate-rules\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">interview<\/a> <\/strong>with Moneyweb, Home Affairs Minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi said that unabridged birth certificates will no longer be required for overseas tourists to South Africa travelling with children.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have given the instruction that, look, it\u2019s no longer wanted. You don\u2019t have to carry it, you don\u2019t have to produce it,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>In a separate <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fin24.com\/Companies\/TravelAndLeisure\/unabridged-birth-certificate-requirement-expected-to-be-completely-scrapped-for-foreigners-as-soon-as-this-week-20191014-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fin24<\/a> <\/strong>report, both the Airline Association of Southern Africa and the Tourism Business Council of SA confirmed that they had been briefed about the changes.<\/p>\n<p>Chair of Tourism Business Council of SA, Blacky Komani, said that the change should be announced officially on 16 October, including timelines for implementation.<\/p>\n<p>The revision to the travel regulations comes as president Cyril Ramaphosa moves to find ways to boost the local tourism industry, as part of his bid to reinvigorate South Africa&#8217;s stagnating economy.<\/p>\n<p>Other changes in the sector include granting visa-free entry to several new countries &#8211; including New Zealand, the UAE and Saudi Arabia &#8211; as well as the introduction of a new e-visa system.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Billions lost<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The birth certificate rules were <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/lifestyle\/235251\/gigabas-crazy-birth-certificate-rule-is-still-causing-families-grief-while-travelling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">introduced<\/a> <\/strong>by home affairs minister Malusi Gigaba in 2015 under the banner of preventing instances of child trafficking.<\/p>\n<p>However, by 2016, after many complaints and a huge knock to South Africa\u2019s tourism numbers, the department said it would rework the laws.<\/p>\n<p>According to data compiled by the DA, the rules\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/141841\/south-africas-crazy-visa-rule-has-cost-r7-5-billion-in-lost-revenue-da\/\">cost South Africa as much as R7.5 billion<\/a><\/strong>, due to lost business from blocked tourists.<\/p>\n<p>In a 2018 survey, travel company Travelstart\u00a0found that 30% of respondents had been denied boarding because of the birth certificate regulation, while 67% of respondents said they needed to apply for an unabridged birth certificate to travel.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, 41% of those respondents who applied for an unabridged birth certificate said that their application took more than 6 weeks to process, adding hassle, stress and cost implications to travel outside South Africa.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Read: <a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/lifestyle\/345930\/15-top-countries-south-africans-can-visit-visa-free-in-2019\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">15 top countries South Africans can visit visa-free in 2019<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Department of Home Affairs will scrap its controversial birth certificate rules for travellers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":10,"featured_media":60317,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[9876],"tags":[26],"class_list":["post-346158","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-lifestyle","tag-headline"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/346158","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/10"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=346158"}],"version-history":[{"count":3,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/346158\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":346178,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/346158\/revisions\/346178"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/60317"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=346158"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=346158"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=346158"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
