{"id":347104,"date":"2019-10-17T11:41:55","date_gmt":"2019-10-17T09:41:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=347104"},"modified":"2019-10-17T11:41:55","modified_gmt":"2019-10-17T09:41:55","slug":"these-are-the-worst-hijacking-hotspots-in-south-africa-right-now","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/motoring\/347104\/these-are-the-worst-hijacking-hotspots-in-south-africa-right-now\/","title":{"rendered":"These are the worst hijacking hotspots in South Africa right now"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Vehicle tracking company Tracker has released its latest crime index, highlighting vehicle theft and hijacking trends in South Africa right now.<\/p>\n<p>The data is based on statistics from Tracker\u2019s 1.1 million installed vehicle base for the period July to September 2019.<\/p>\n<p>The data shows that the majority (58%) of all activations &#8211; where Tracker initiated recovery action &#8211; are in Gauteng. This is followed by Kwa-Zulu Natal, Western Cape, North West, Mpumalanga, Eastern Cape, Free State, Limpopo and Northern Cape, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Most activations for hijackings take place on Saturday followed by Thursday, while vehicles are activated for theft equally on Friday and Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>These hijackings take place between 10h00 and 14h00 as well as 20h00 and midnight, on any day of the week, while theft activations occur mainly between 05h00 and 08h00.<\/p>\n<p>The top hijacking hotspot routes include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The N3 from Heidelberg to Vosloorus;<\/li>\n<li>The N12 from Phola to Daveyton;<\/li>\n<li>South Rand Road (N17);<\/li>\n<li>The R50\/ Delmas Road;<\/li>\n<li>The N14, the R512;<\/li>\n<li>The Moroka Bypass on the N12;<\/li>\n<li>The Molefe Makinta Highway (M21);<\/li>\n<li>The Sybrand van Niekerk Freeway (R59) and the R21.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Tracker-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-347126\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Tracker-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"1103\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Tracker-1.png 547w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Tracker-1-218x300.png 218w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Trends<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Tracker said hostage-taking during hijackings remains a concern.<\/p>\n<p>The group said that an average of 29% of its activations result in a hostage being taken, with 1% suffering a physical injury or fatality.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;While the 2018\/2019 SAPS crime statistics noted a national decrease of 1.8% in car and truck hijackings and a national decrease of 4.6% in vehicle theft, vehicle-related crime remains high with a total 17,208 car and truck hijackings and 48,324 vehicles reported stolen,\u201d said Ron Knott-Craig, executive operational services at Tracker South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The SAPS figures combined with Tracker\u2019s statistics, which note a consistency in vehicle crime trends, indicate that South Africans should be wary and remain vigilant at all times.
