{"id":34714,"date":"2013-04-02T10:22:06","date_gmt":"2013-04-02T08:22:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=34714"},"modified":"2013-04-02T10:45:05","modified_gmt":"2013-04-02T08:45:05","slug":"telkom-shares-buoyed-by-new-leadership","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/trending\/34714\/telkom-shares-buoyed-by-new-leadership\/","title":{"rendered":"Telkom shares buoyed by new leadership"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a title=\"Telkom\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1637-Telkom\">Telkom<\/a> looked to make early gains in morning trade on the JSE on Tuesday (2 April) following the appointment of a new executive team last week.<\/p>\n<p>Mobile operators, <a title=\"MTN\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1640-MTN-Group\">MTN<\/a> and <a title=\"Vodacom\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1639-Vodacom\">Vodacom<\/a> also made solid gains, but ICT group <a title=\"Gijima\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/2341-Gijima\">Gijima<\/a> continues to struggle following a very disappointing results announcement late last week.<\/p>\n<p>Shares in Telkom looked to consolidate above the R15 mark on Tuesday, up 1.2% to R15.18\u00a0 shortly before 10am, having gained 5.5% to R15 on Thursday (28 March) when <a title=\"Sipho Maseko\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/2088-Sipho-Maseko\">Sipho Maseko<\/a>\u00a0was named as the new\u00a0Telkom\u00a0CEO.<\/p>\n<p>The telco also announced the appointment of Dr\u00a0<a title=\"Brian Armstrong\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/3187-Brian-Armstrong\">Brian Armstrong<\/a>\u00a0as group chief operating officer.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Nadim Mohamed\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/4548-Nadim-Mohamed\">Nadim Mohamed<\/a>, investment analyst and partner at\u00a0<a title=\"First Avenue Investment Management\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1675-First-Avenue-Investment-Management\">First Avenue Investment Management<\/a>\u00a0said the ability to monetize Telkom&#8217;s substantial broadband assets would be key for the new management team.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, the group rebranded and restructured its mobile arm as Telkom Mobile,\u00a0incorporating\u00a0<a title=\"8ta\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1669-8ta\">8ta<\/a>\u00a0into it as a \u201csub-brand\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He also noted that Telkom\u2019s new mobile strategy would play a leading role in the group\u2019s success moving forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do like the concept behind the Telkom Mobile strategy and this could be compelling if implemented properly.\u00a0 It&#8217;s not an easy road ahead for Telkom,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview with the Business Times, Telkom chairman <a title=\"Jabu Mabuza\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/6039-Jabulane-Albert-Mabuza\">Jabu Mabuza<\/a> also sought to allay investor fears that government was driving group strategy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTelkom is a public, listed company that has got a lot of other shareholders other than government,\u201d said Mr Mabuza.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShareholders don\u2019t give companies strategies. Shareholders approve strategies that deliver the return they expect from their investment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Government has a 39.7% direct stake in Telkom directly, and an additional 10.6% through the state-owned Public Investment Corporation (<a title=\"PIC\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/3183-PIC-Public-Investment-Corporation\">PIC<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Vodacom and MTN<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Shares in Vodacom and MTN also rose in morning trade on the JSE on Tuesday, having disappointed in recent weeks.<\/p>\n<p>Shortly before 10am, Vodacom gathered R1.72 or 1.57% to R111.62, while MTN garnered R1.52 to R1.63, with both still someway short of their 52 week high of R129.88, and R184.45 respectively.<\/p>\n<p>The All Share Index traded half a percent higher, at 40,069 points.<\/p>\n<p>Analyst Mohamed advised further caution. \u201cSince last year, I&#8217;ve been concerned about a price war situation developing in the SA market and its impact on Vodacom and MTN.\u00a0 We&#8217;ve seen this start to accelerate with the many promotions that have been introduced by these operators almost on a daily basis.<\/p>\n<p>He also pointed out that watchdog Icasa&#8217;s decision to reduce MTR&#8217;s has allowed for more effective competition by smaller players.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In addition, data which is becoming a commodity now costs as little as 4.8c\/Mb. I remember it being closer to 30c\/Mb at the beginning of last year.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This will certainly place pressure on Vodacom&#8217;s margin given its reliance on the SA market.\u00a0 With MTN, we see a similar phenomenon taking place in the rest of Africa as regulator&#8217;s become more active in these markets,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>He cited an example in Nigeria of a steep 40% cut in\u00a0MTRs,\u00a0effective 1 April, announced last week. \u00a0&#8220;The regulator has the ability to significantly influence the level of competition within a telco industry and we think that it will become increasing more difficult\u00a0 to defend existing, sizeable margins as African regulators introduce MTR cuts, number portability, etc,&#8221;\u00a0Mohamed said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gijima<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Shares in Gijima fell 20% to 12 cents. In publishing its results on Thursday (28 March), for the six months ended December 2012, Gijima reported a 23% decline in revenue from continuing operations.<\/p>\n<p>Revenue from continuing operations was R911 million, down from R1.1 billion in 2011, and the operating loss from continuing operations was R123 million, after a R33 million operating profit.
