{"id":34747,"date":"2013-04-03T00:30:11","date_gmt":"2013-04-02T22:30:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=34747"},"modified":"2013-04-03T08:48:27","modified_gmt":"2013-04-03T06:48:27","slug":"25-market-share-achievable-knott-craig","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/mobile\/34747\/25-market-share-achievable-knott-craig\/","title":{"rendered":"25% market share achievable: Knott-Craig"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a title=\"Cell C\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1641-Cell-C\">Cell C<\/a> CEO <a title=\"Alan Knott-Craig\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1642-Alan-Knott-Craig-%28Senior%29\">Alan Knott-Craig<\/a> says that it remains possible for Cell C to gain a 25% share of South Africa&#8217;s cellular market, but regulatory intervention will be needed to level the playing field.<\/p>\n<p>When Knott-Craig rook the reins at Cell C on 1 April 2012, he said that his aim was to grow Cell C\u2019s market share to 25%.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, Knott-Craig said that he will achieve this by \u201cchanging the old rules\u201d of the South African cellular environment.<\/p>\n<p>Cell C currently claims a 14% market share in SA, while <a title=\"Vodacom\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1639-Vodacom\">Vodacom<\/a>\u2019s share is over 52% with 30.6 million customers; <a title=\"MTN\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1640-MTN-Group\">MTN<\/a>, with 25.4 million subscribers, has an approximate share of 33%.<\/p>\n<p>This means that Cell C will have to wrestle a significant number of subscribers from Vodacom and MTN to meet its target.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview with BusinessTech last week, Knott-Craig said that he believes this remains a reachable target, given that regulatory environment changes take effect.<\/p>\n<p>The Cell C CEO highlighted the need for asymmetric termination rates, a more effective porting regime and stronger regulation to create a level telecoms playing field.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">We are making a difference: Alan Knott-Craig<\/h3>\n<p>Knott-Craig said that, while running a smaller operator in South Africa has proven to be very challenging, he believes the company is making a difference.<\/p>\n<p>He said that the local cellular market looks very different now than it did twelve months ago, which includes much lower prices to consumers.<\/p>\n<p>However, this is only the beginning.
