{"id":348242,"date":"2019-10-23T10:03:38","date_gmt":"2019-10-23T08:03:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=348242"},"modified":"2019-10-23T10:32:14","modified_gmt":"2019-10-23T08:32:14","slug":"nissan-set-to-axe-datsun-brand-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/motoring\/348242\/nissan-set-to-axe-datsun-brand-report\/","title":{"rendered":"Nissan set to axe Datsun brand: report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Nissan will likely axe its Datsun brand, drop some unprofitable products and close a number of assembly lines worldwide.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-autoshow-tokyo-nissan-exclusive\/exclusive-datsun-brand-set-to-go-as-nissan-rolls-back-ghosns-expansionist-strategy-sources-idUSKBN1X20NE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Reuters<\/a> <\/strong>reports that these measures are part of the Yokohama-based automaker\u2019s latest attempt to pull itself out of crisis after its CEO Carlos Ghosn was arrested for financial misconduct.<\/p>\n<p>The Datsun brand &#8211; revived for emerging markets under Ghosn after being phased out in the 1980s &#8211; will likely bear the brunt of the restructuring. The models are manufactured in Indonesia, India and Russia.<\/p>\n<p>Citing two company sources with direct knowledge of the matter, Reuters said problems emerged after Nissan began deploying the no-frills cars in 2014 in small markets such as Indonesia, India, Russia and South Africa, where it also sells vehicles under its mainstay Nissan brand.<\/p>\n<p>In Indonesia, for example, after a relatively good start, Datsun cars soon began eating into Nissan sales.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe ended up pushing two mainstream brands in a market where you have a 1 &#8211; 2% market share.
