{"id":348869,"date":"2019-10-25T09:14:49","date_gmt":"2019-10-25T07:14:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=348869"},"modified":"2019-10-25T09:14:49","modified_gmt":"2019-10-25T07:14:49","slug":"these-are-the-tax-increases-that-may-hit-south-africans-soon-dawie-roodt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/finance\/348869\/these-are-the-tax-increases-that-may-hit-south-africans-soon-dawie-roodt\/","title":{"rendered":"These are the tax increases that may hit South Africans soon: Dawie Roodt"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>South Africa&#8217;s growing budget deficit may result in further tax increases to help cover the shortfall, says chief economist of the Efficient Group Dawie Roodt.<\/p>\n<p>Roodt said that Moody\u2019s may also decide to downgrade South Africa\u2019s sovereign credit rating to sub-investment grade because of the country&#8217;s poor economic figures.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Because of abysmally low growth figures in this country coupled to record high unemployment numbers, the fiscus is in deep trouble. Debts owed by state-owned enterprises amount to around half a trillion rand,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;With the rand remaining under pressure and SARS&#8217; inability to collect sufficient taxes to cover the government\u2019s growing fiscal deficit, there is a very real possibility that the minister may decide to (announce tax increases) in his upcoming mid-term budget.<\/p>\n<p>Roodt said this is most likely to take the form of an <strong>increase in personal income tax <\/strong>and <strong>possibly even a hike in VAT<\/strong> \u2013 depending on how serious the finance minister believes the current crisis is.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;One of my biggest fears at the moment is that Eskom is technically bankrupt because its income from electricity sales is not covering its operating costs \u2013 especially from its vastly bloated workforce.
