one notch above junk &#8211; with a stable outlook.<\/p>\n<p>The country has been rated below investment grade since 2017 by ratings agencies Standard &amp; Poor and Fitch.<\/p>\n<p>Should the agency also downgrade South Africa to junk status, the country would no longer be eligible for inclusion in debt gauges such as Citigroup Inc\u2019s World Government Bond Index (WGBI).<\/p>\n<p>A downgrade may also have an effect on the rand, says chief trader at Standard Bank Warrick Butler, who was speaking in an interview with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/af.reuters.com\/article\/southAfricaNews\/idAFL5N27A1QE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Reuters<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A downgrade by Moody\u2019s, which is considered highly unlikely by most commentators, will push the rand back into the <strong>R15-area and maybe even R16<\/strong> depending on market positioning,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;While another stay and an acceptable MTBPS and we should see <strong>R14.35 or even R14.20<\/strong> swiftly afterwards,&#8221; Butler said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Not all doom and gloom<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As weak as the country\u2019s finances are, a new <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/af.reuters.com\/article\/southAfricaNews\/idAFL5N27A1QE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Reuters<\/a> <\/strong>poll predicted unanimously that South Africa would avoid a credit rating downgrade when Moody\u2019s reviews its status.<\/p>\n<p>Reserve Bank governor Lesetya Kganyago also <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business\/347242\/what-junk-status-could-mean-for-south-africa-according-to-the-reserve-bank\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">believes<\/a> <\/strong>that a downgrade may already be priced into markets, meaning South Africa could see positive upward swing if Moody&#8217;s maintains its rating.<\/p>\n<p>He added that if\u00a0the downgrade goes ahead and South Africa falls out of investment-grade-only indices, the country\u2019s debt will still attract investors but market stability may become a problem.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf it is reflected in the current financial market prices, then a downgrade should not have such an adverse effect on the South African financial assets because it is already priced in, but if it is not priced in, we are going to see an outflow of funds from the South African bond markets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe problem with those sub-investment grade investors is that they are speculative in nature and they will just introduce volatility of capital flows for South Africa,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Moody&#8217;s is expected to release its review on 1 November 2019.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Read: <a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/finance\/348869\/these-are-the-tax-increases-that-may-hit-south-africans-soon-dawie-roodt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">These are the tax increases that may hit South Africans soon: Dawie Roodt<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>South Africa is preparing itself for the possibility that Moody\u2019s may downgrade the country&#8217;s sovereign credit rating to sub-investment grade.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":10,"featured_media":114834,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[11121],"tags":[26,1512,499],"class_list":["post-348885","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-finance","tag-headline","tag-moodys","tag-standard-bank"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/348885","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/10"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=348885"}],"version-history":[{"count":8,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/348885\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":348925,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/348885\/revisions\/348925"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/114834"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=348885"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=348885"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=348885"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
