{"id":34906,"date":"2013-04-04T14:45:38","date_gmt":"2013-04-04T12:45:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=34906"},"modified":"2013-05-22T13:13:06","modified_gmt":"2013-05-22T11:13:06","slug":"iburst-icasa-mum-on-network-fiasco","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/telecommunications\/34906\/iburst-icasa-mum-on-network-fiasco\/","title":{"rendered":"iBurst, Icasa mum on network fiasco"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Numerous iBurst and Broadlink customers continue to suffer from network disruptions, but the two main parties involved in the debacle \u2013 WBS\/iBurst and the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) \u2013 cannot divulge details about the connectivity problems.<\/p>\n<p>A large portion of iBurst\u2019s network went down yesterday, which according to well-placed industry sources, was caused by core network equipment attachment by ICASA at the MTN Gallo Manor data centre.<\/p>\n<p>This network confiscation allegedly forms part of the ongoing spectrum license fee dispute between WBS\/iBurst and ICASA.<\/p>\n<p>Broadlink Managing Director Mike Brown, who uses iBurst\u2019s infrastructure to provide connectivity service to clients, confirmed that the regulator\u2019s actions are behind the network problems.<\/p>\n<p>Brown said at the time that they are applying for an urgent court interdict against ICASA to get their network up and running again.<\/p>\n<p>It is understood that iBurst has started to bypass the affected network areas, which brought back some areas of the iBurst network.<\/p>\n<p>However, many industry players have raised concerns that iBurst is not addressing the issue behind ICASA\u2019s decision, which may result in similar actions by the regulator down the line.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">iBurst users left in the dark<\/h3>\n<p>Numerous iBurst subscribers are complaining about the company\u2019s silence about the downtime. \u201cPlease issue a statement. No doubt you\u2019re trying to restore services, but while you do we\u2019re left studying Morse code and ICASA regs,\u201d said one Twitter user.<\/p>\n<p>iBurst spokesperson Sheila Bhengu told MyBroadband that she cannot share any information about the downtime at this time. The iBurst data centre where the main problems occurred is the MTN Gallo Manor facility.<\/p>\n<p>However, MTN denied that there were any power failures at its Gallo Manor data centre.<\/p>\n<p>ICASA could also not immediately comment on the issue.
