{"id":349409,"date":"2019-10-28T18:00:03","date_gmt":"2019-10-28T16:00:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=349409"},"modified":"2019-10-28T17:04:27","modified_gmt":"2019-10-28T15:04:27","slug":"security-guards-vs-police-officers-how-much-money-they-earn-in-south-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/finance\/349409\/security-guards-vs-police-officers-how-much-money-they-earn-in-south-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"Security guards vs police officers &#8211; how much money they earn in South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (PSIRA) has released a new consultation <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.za\/sites\/default\/files\/gcis_document\/201910\/42797gen583.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">paper<\/a> <\/strong>showing that there are 463,833 security officers employed across South Africa &#8211; excluding those employed in-house by companies.<\/p>\n<p>However, this figure does not account for the large number of individuals who are not currently employed, with <b><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/325093\/the-number-of-police-officers-vs-security-guards-in-south-africa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Psira<\/a> <\/b>estimating that there are as many as 2.36 million security officers are registered in the country.<\/p>\n<p>By comparison, the recently <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/345562\/heres-how-much-money-police-officers-earn-in-south-africa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">published<\/a> <\/strong>South African Police Service (SAPS) annual report shows that the SAPS has a total of 192,277 employees \u2013 including 150,855 SAPS Act members and 41,422 Public Service Act employees.<\/p>\n<p>This gives South Africa a ratio of 1 police officer to 383 people in the country, which is far removed from the international standard of 1 to 220.<\/p>\n<p>This means that there are close to two and a half security officers to every police officer in South Africa.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Police officer salaries\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The SAPS annual report shows that employees work across a range of sectors including \u2018administration\u2019, \u2018visible policing\u2019 and \u2018crime intelligence\u2019, with salaries averaging at\u00a0<strong>R151,000<\/strong>\u00a0for the lowest skills level (1-2).<\/p>\n<p>This rises to an average salary of\u00a0<strong>R1,284,000<\/strong>\u00a0for senior management and executive employees (levels 13-16). Designing security solutions.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td bgcolor=\"#EEEEEE\">Grade B<\/td>\n<td>Primary function is access control in high-risk areas where documentation and basic computer skills might be required. A site or shift commander. Managing of lower grade security officers.
