{"id":351867,"date":"2019-11-06T18:00:07","date_gmt":"2019-11-06T16:00:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=351867"},"modified":"2019-11-06T17:08:13","modified_gmt":"2019-11-06T15:08:13","slug":"south-africans-have-shockingly-high-levels-of-debt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/finance\/351867\/south-africans-have-shockingly-high-levels-of-debt\/","title":{"rendered":"South Africans have shockingly high levels of debt"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>New data from DebtBusters shows that an increasing number of South Africans are finding it hard to make ends meet and are using larger portions of their salaries to service debt.<\/p>\n<p>DebtBusters is the country\u2019s largest debt counsellor and its quarterly analysis tracks client trends quarter-on-quarter and over the past four years.<\/p>\n<p>According to Benay Sager, DebtBusters\u2019 chief operating officer, the average debt repayment to net income figure is 61% &#8211; well above sustainable levels.<\/p>\n<p>By comparison, the overall debt levels &#8211; the total debt exposure to annual net income &#8211; has increased to 107%, he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When we look at the lowest and highest income earners, the situation is even starker. People who earn less than R5,000 a month need <strong>63%<\/strong> of their income to repay their creditors.
