{"id":352717,"date":"2019-11-11T07:15:13","date_gmt":"2019-11-11T05:15:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=352717"},"modified":"2019-11-11T07:15:13","modified_gmt":"2019-11-11T05:15:13","slug":"rain-5g-launches-in-south-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/telecommunications\/352717\/rain-5g-launches-in-south-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"Rain 5G launches in South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Rain has officially launched its\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rain.co.za\/fiveg?utm_source=MyBroadband&amp;utm_medium=Article\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>5G service<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0to the public, offering unlimited data at speeds of up to 700Mbps at R1,000 per month.<\/p>\n<p>Rain first launched its 5G products in September, but this was only open to a \u201cselect group of existing customers\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The company has now opened its network to anyone who has 5G coverage and has made its latest 5G coverage map available online.<\/p>\n<p>Rain\u2019s 5G service is currently available in many areas in Johannesburg and Tshwane \u2013 where it has around 250 towers \u2013 with an estimated 500,000 households in the coverage area.<\/p>\n<p>During 2020, Rain hopes to expand the network to Cape Town and Durban, and in due course cover all of metropolitan South Africa with 2,000 live 5G sites.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Real-world speeds<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Rain Chief Marketing Officer Khaya Dlanga previously said Rain has seen speeds approaching 700Mbps in ideal conditions.<\/p>\n<p>However, in real-world conditions, Rain 5G subscribers can expect to experience speeds of around 200Mbps.<\/p>\n<p>In real-world tests conducted on MyBroadband\u2019s speed test platform, an average download speed of 500Mbps \u2013 with speeds peaking at 700Mbps \u2013 were achieved.<\/p>\n<p>Watching multiple 4K Netflix streams while downloading large files simultaneously was no problem for the connection.<\/p>\n<p>Upload speeds were significantly slower than download speeds, though, hovering between 10Mbps-20Mbps.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ordering Rain 5G<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Consumers can now order Rain\u2019s 5G service from the company\u2019s website after ensuring they have coverage where they live.<\/p>\n<p>There is only one product available: Rain unlimited data for R1,000 per month with a Huawei 5G CPE Pro router for R3,450 (once-off).<\/p>\n<p>A client\u2019s order will contain the router and a Rain SIM, and when received users will need to perform a speed test and hit at least 80Mbps to activate the service.<\/p>\n<p>To assist users to get the best 5G signal in their area, there is a Rain optimiser which guides the user as to where they should place the router.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Read: <a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/telecommunications\/347822\/these-are-the-best-and-worst-mobile-networks-in-south-africa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">These are the best and worst mobile networks in South Africa<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rain has officially launched its\u00a05G service\u00a0to the public, offering unlimited data at speeds of up to 700Mbps at R1,000 per month.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":31,"featured_media":214989,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[21],"tags":[26,11939],"class_list":["post-352717","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-telecommunications","tag-headline","tag-rain"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/352717","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/31"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=352717"}],"version-history":[{"count":3,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/352717\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":352735,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/352717\/revisions\/352735"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/214989"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=352717"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=352717"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=352717"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
