{"id":352849,"date":"2019-11-11T10:02:38","date_gmt":"2019-11-11T08:02:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=352849"},"modified":"2019-11-11T10:02:38","modified_gmt":"2019-11-11T08:02:38","slug":"bee-is-not-working-capitec-ceo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business\/352849\/bee-is-not-working-capitec-ceo\/","title":{"rendered":"BEE is not working: Capitec CEO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Despite the best of intentions, South Africa&#8217;s Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) scheme has largely been a failure, says Capitec&#8217;s chief executive officer (CEO), Gerrie Fourie.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking in an interview with <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.702.co.za\/articles\/366496\/bee-has-not-worked-says-capitec-ceo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">702<\/a><\/strong>, Fourie said that this is because the system has only helped a select few.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If you look at BEE in totality in South Africa, it hasn&#8217;t worked because it should be there to help all South Africans and, unfortunately, it has only helped a couple of people. I think that is something we need to work on.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There is also an attitude in South Africa that we need to work on that says &#8216;what can I do?&#8217; rather than (focusing on) entitlement. I think that&#8217;s quite crucial for our culture going forward.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>When asked about what advice he would give to President Cyril Ramaphosa, he said that the country should focus on three main points:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Growth<\/strong> &#8211; Each and every person in South Africa should focus on growing and creating jobs;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Execution\u00a0<\/strong> &#8211; \u00a0The second one is to execute. It is quite nice talking about things but the execution is critical because when you execute, you learn and you see what works.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Positivity<\/strong> &#8211; Let&#8217;s be positive and look a the opportunities (within South Africa).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>New regulations\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Fourie&#8217;s comments follow a renewed push\u00a0to enforce transformation in South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>Minister of Employment and Labour, Thulas Nxesi, says that his department plans to introduce harsh measures against employers who do not meet employment equity targets.<\/p>\n<p>In August, Nxesi expressed\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business\/337209\/government-to-introduce-harsh-measures-to-enforce-transformation-in-south-africa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">concern<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>at the slow pace of workplace transformation and promised that government will now introduce new legislation to remedy these issues.<\/p>\n<p>Answering in a recent parliamentary Q&amp;A session, Nxesi said that the incoming Employment Equity Amendment Bill will expedite the pace of transformation and address non-compliance with the requirements of the Employment Equity Act (EEA).<\/p>\n<p>He added that this new bill will likely be tabled in parliament for deliberation before the end of this year.<\/p>\n<p>Nxesi said that these changes will serve as punishments to non-compliant businesses in two main ways:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>All organisations that are deemed non-compliant will no longer be able to reap the financial benefits of doing business with the state;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Even non-compliant organisations that do not necessarily depend on state contracts for their business will still have to face consequences by being referred to the Labour Court for a penalty to be levied against them.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Read: <a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/banking\/352487\/why-south-africans-are-closing-their-bank-accounts-and-where-theyre-going-instead\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Why South Africans are closing their bank accounts \u2013 and where they\u2019re going instead<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Despite the best of intentions, South Africa&#8217;s Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) scheme has largely been a failure says Capitec&#8217;s chief executive officer Gerrie Fourie.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":10,"featured_media":122607,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[9872],"tags":[1798,26],"class_list":["post-352849","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-business","tag-capitec","tag-headline"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/352849","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/10"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=352849"}],"version-history":[{"count":11,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/352849\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":352913,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/352849\/revisions\/352913"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/122607"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=352849"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=352849"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=352849"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
