{"id":364358,"date":"2020-01-06T13:10:55","date_gmt":"2020-01-06T11:10:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=364358"},"modified":"2020-01-06T13:10:55","modified_gmt":"2020-01-06T11:10:55","slug":"matric-students-should-not-be-told-they-failed-south-african-professor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/364358\/matric-students-should-not-be-told-they-failed-south-african-professor\/","title":{"rendered":"Matric students should not be told they &#8216;failed&#8217;: South African professor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Matric exam results are a source of joy for many, but if learners do not achieve the marks required for university admission it is not the end of the world and they shouldn&#8217;t be called failures.<\/p>\n<p>This is the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.up.ac.za\/news\/post_2865928-coping-with-bad-news-in-matric-results-do-not-give-up-hope-says-up-psychologist-and-career-counselling-expert-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">view<\/a> <\/strong>of Kobus Maree, a professor in the Department of Educational Psychology at the University of Pretoria, who asserts that the word \u2018fail\u2019 has no place in current society.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Instead the phrase \u2018insufficient achievement\u2019 is more appropriate,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Maree, who has doctorates in career counselling, psychology as well as in learning facilitation in mathematics, said while your current marks will co-determine whether you will be accepted into your preferred field of study, they will not determine if you will be successful in life.<\/p>\n<p>Nor will they limit your career prospects, he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It hurts when one learns that the outcomes of an examination were less successful than expected. But step back emotionally and interpret the experience logically.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;All human beings experience success and are less successful from time to time. This is the most normal thing in the world.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Performing insufficiently<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Learners who performed insufficiently can apply for the remarking of their papers, register for and write supplementary exams, or even re-do their grade or repeat certain subjects, said Maree.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;However, there is no \u2018one size that fits all\u2019.
