Eskom chairman Jabu Mabuza has\u00a0resigned<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0from his position at the power utility.<\/p>\n

His resignation took place today, 10 January 2020, and followed several days of consistent load-shedding.<\/p>\n

The office of President Cyril Ramaphosa said Mabuza wrote a letter as part of his resignation announcement, in which he apologised for Eskom\u2019s inability to meet the commitment it made to the president to avoid load-shedding from 11 December 2019 to 13 January 2020.<\/p>\n

\u201cEskom presented plans to ensure that the risk of load-shedding would be eliminated during the holiday period until 13 January 2020. Eskom also outlined the risks affecting the national grid,\u201d said Ramaphosa\u2019s office.<\/p>\n

\u201cPublic Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan has accepted Mr Mabuza\u2019s resignation. President Ramaphosa has expressed his gratitude to Mr Mabuza for serving Eskom and the nation during a challenging period and has commended Mr Mabuza for taking responsibility and accepting accountability for events under his leadership.\u201d<\/p>\n

It went on to state that the government will soon announce a \u201creconfigured Eskom board with the appropriate mix of electricity industry, engineering, and corporate governance experience\u201d.<\/p>\n

Mabuza\u2019s role<\/strong><\/p>\n

Mabuza, the former chairman of Telkom, was announced as Eskom\u2019s new chairman in\u00a0January 2018.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

He was appointed as part of a plan to \u201cstabilise management\u201d at the power utility.<\/p>\n

More recently, in July 2019, Mabuza was appointed\u00a0acting CEO<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0of Eskom after Phakamani Hadebe stepped down due to his health suffering from the \u201cunimaginable demands\u201d of the job.<\/p>\n

Mabuza was described as a \u201csafe pair of hands\u201d by Raymond Parsons, a professor at North-West University\u2019s Business School in Potchefstroom, at the time \u2013 and the move was called a \u201cpositive development\u201d.<\/p>\n

Following several months at the helm, Mabuza stepped back as Andre de Ruyter\u00a0was selected<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0as the new CEO of Eskom \u2013 starting his job earlier this month.<\/p>\n

Weekend load shedding<\/strong><\/p>\n

Eskom announced that there is no load shedding expected on Saturday.<\/p>\n

However, it warned that its systems are still extremely vulnerable, and that the risk of load shedding being implemented on Saturday evening and again on Sunday were high.<\/p>\n
