Absa<\/a>‘s banking app, which launched on 10 April 2013, has already been downloaded over 50,000 times, the bank has announced.<\/p>\n

The bank’s app is the last to market out of SA’s big four banks, though according to Absa, it is the first native financial services app for smartphones and tablets in South Africa that is available for both retail and business customers alike.<\/p>\n

Customers can link multiple devices to a single account or conversely multiple accounts can be linked to a single device.<\/p>\n

The technology integrates with all other Absa digital banking channels and incorporates many aspects of traditional transactional services, while combining smart device features such as GPS location to allow for easy and instant search to the closest Absa branch or ATM.<\/p>\n

The app also utilises a device’s contacts to make the sending of airtime or cash to friends and family quick and easy, the bank said.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur App will continue to evolve over the coming months with additional functionality and features starting with the support for Blackberry devices in the next six weeks,” said Absa\u2019s head of retail banking Arrie Rautenbach<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe offering is aligned to Absa\u2019s focus on its customers and places convenience at centre stage, making our customers\u2019 lives easier,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

FNB<\/a> was the first bank to launch a mobile banking app in July 2011.<\/p>\n

Standard Bank was second to launch its app in June 2012, netting 160,000 downloads in its first 4 months; while Nedbank<\/a> followed with the launch of its App Suite a month later in July 2012, hitting 115,000 downloads in its first six months.<\/p>\n

Absa, which boasts 12.2 million clients, had originally earmarked a launch date of Q4 2011 for its app, but that was extended into 2012 due to problems with its back-end system. The delay was extended further into Q1 2013.<\/p>\n
