{"id":368718,"date":"2020-01-28T12:28:15","date_gmt":"2020-01-28T10:28:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=368718"},"modified":"2020-01-28T12:33:26","modified_gmt":"2020-01-28T10:33:26","slug":"taxes-not-extra-money-out-of-your-pocket-will-fund-the-nhi-government","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/368718\/taxes-not-extra-money-out-of-your-pocket-will-fund-the-nhi-government\/","title":{"rendered":"Taxes &#8211; not &#8216;extra money out of your pocket&#8217; &#8211; will fund the NHI: government"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A number of government social media accounts have launched an education initiative about the incoming National Health Insurance (NHI).<\/p>\n<p>In a series of tweets and Facebook posts, the bodies outlined some of the fundamental points of the new system including its benefits and how it will be run.<\/p>\n<p>One tweet <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NationalNhi\/status\/1221680192713822208\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">notes<\/a> <\/strong>that the NHI will allow users to access comprehensive healthcare at any NHI facility across the country.<\/p>\n<p>Another <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NationalNhi\/status\/1221680051483238403\/photo\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">post<\/a> <\/strong>indicates that all South Africans will have access to healthcare services free of charge.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">What is <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/NHI?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#NHI<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/DiWfy6FiqO\">pic.twitter.com\/DiWfy6FiqO<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 National Health Insurance &#8211; NHI (@NationalNhi) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NationalNhi\/status\/1221680192713822208?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 27, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>However, one specific post has drawn the ire of readers as it highlights how the new scheme will be funded.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GautengHealth\/status\/1221697347673120770\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">tweet <\/a><\/strong>&#8211; which has since been deleted from the official NHI account &#8211; states that the NHI will not be funded by &#8216;extra money from your pocket&#8217; but will instead be paid for by taxation and appropriated through parliament.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/NHI.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-368736 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/NHI.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"686\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/NHI.png 540w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/NHI-236x300.png 236w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Finance minister Tito Mboweni has previously said the NHI will be implemented at a pace that is <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/357963\/south-africa-to-introduce-nhi-at-an-affordable-pace\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">affordable<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>to the country.<\/p>\n<p>He has also confirmed that National Treasury is currently developing a financing paper on the NHI.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The National Treasury has prepared a NHI financing paper, which lays out various scenarios for financing potential shortfalls for the NHI.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;However, there is still a lot that is being discussed between the Minister of Health and myself in order to make sure that we live up to the expectations.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are all committed to the NHI and the functioning of the National Health system.
