Eskom has announced that stage 2 load shedding will be implemented on Thursday from 21h00 to 06h00 on Friday morning.<\/p>\n
This follows warnings earlier in the day that the grid was under pressure due to delays in maintenance.<\/p>\n
\u201cUnits that were expected to come back from maintenance were delayed, which led to diesel generators being used overnight,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n
It said that it will use the time to replenish reserves, and the risk of further load shedding on Friday remains.<\/p>\n
Load shedding last hit in the first weeks of January, with the power utility\u00a0managed to avoid load shedding since then \u2013 despite high levels of unplanned outages, sitting around 13,000MW \u2013 due to lower demand and adequate reserves.<\/p>\n
According to experts, load shedding is expected to continue for the next two to three years at the very least, as Eskom moves to build new capacity and government clears the way for independent producers to get on the grid.<\/p>\n
However, this would require everything to go right in this regard \u2013 and doubts linger that government, state companies and the private sector will be able to work together.<\/p>\n
The total economic impact of load shedding in South Africa could be as high as R338 billion over the past 10 years, according to the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR).<\/p>\n
