{"id":370938,"date":"2020-02-04T14:07:32","date_gmt":"2020-02-04T12:07:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=370938"},"modified":"2020-02-04T14:13:26","modified_gmt":"2020-02-04T12:13:26","slug":"turkish-company-wants-to-use-powerships-to-fix-south-africas-electricity-problems-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/energy\/370938\/turkish-company-wants-to-use-powerships-to-fix-south-africas-electricity-problems-report\/","title":{"rendered":"Turkish company wants to use powerships to fix South Africa&#8217;s electricity problems: report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Turkish company Karpowership, one of the world\u2019s largest powership firms, has submitted a plan to the South African government to provide several ships capable of plugging a severe power shortage in the country.<\/p>\n<p>In December 2019, South Africa\u2019s energy department issued a request for information (RFI) to source between 2,000 and 3,000 megawatts (MW) of power generation capacity that could be connected in the shortest time, at the least cost.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to <a href=\"https:\/\/af.reuters.com\/article\/commoditiesNews\/idAFL8N2A35IJ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Reuters<\/a>, Patrick O\u2019Driscoll, global sales director at Karpowership, said that the company has responded to the tender through the planned use of power ships.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have made a submission to the department as of last Friday and they received information on what is possible, where and how we would look to do it,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have identified several locations that we believe are potential injection points.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/energy\/334366-the-solution-to-south-africas-electricity-problems-powerships.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MyBroadband<\/a> <\/strong>in January, energy advisor Ted Blom said that powerships are cost-effective, privately owned and operated floating power stations which can be moored at South African harbours.<\/p>\n<p>Each powership contains its own generation, electrical control, and substation components.
