Shipments of all handsets grew 12% YoY in the first quarter thanks to the continued strength of the smartphone market, which achieved an all-time high of 49% shipment penetration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWorldwide handset and smartphone shipments exhibited classic Q1 softness,\u201d said senior analyst <a title=\"Michael Morgan\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/8357-Michael-Morgan\">Michael Morgan<\/a>. \u201c<a title=\"Samsung\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1813-Samsung\">Samsung<\/a> accomplished strong smartphone growth while <a title=\"Apple\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1648-Apple\">Apple<\/a> dismissed a troubling mix of slowed growth and declining margins as a sign that the older iPhone 4S was in high demand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Nokia\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1650-Nokia-Corporation\">Nokia<\/a> handset shipments plummeted to 62 million in Q1 with smartphone shipments at a 5-year low of 6.1 million.<\/p>\n<p>Considering market and OEM specific conditions, <a title=\"BlackBerry\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1752-BlackBerry\">BlackBerry<\/a> delivered a respectable 6 million shipments, with 1 million coming from the launch of BlackBerry 10-based devices.<\/p>\n<p>Despite <a title=\"HTC\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1987-HTC-Corporation\">HTC<\/a>\u2019s well-designed ONE devices, shipments continued to decline 37% YoY to 4.8 million.
