{"id":37329,"date":"2013-05-07T15:45:39","date_gmt":"2013-05-07T13:45:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=37329"},"modified":"2013-05-08T09:13:42","modified_gmt":"2013-05-08T07:13:42","slug":"mtn-hit-with-ghana-fine-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/mobile\/37329\/mtn-hit-with-ghana-fine-report\/","title":{"rendered":"MTN hit with Ghana fine: report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a title=\"MTN\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1640-MTN-Group\">MTN<\/a> has been slapped with a GHS300,000 (R1.37 million) fine in Ghana for violating a quality service standards prescribed by the National Communications Authority (NCA), the Business &amp; Financial Times has reported.<\/p>\n<p>Shares in MTN Group declined R2.25 or 1.32% to R168.71 in the afternoon session on the JSE after it was also reported that the company risks losing its licence in the Ivory Coast if it does not improve its levels of service.<\/p>\n<p>The All Share Index added \u00a00.52% to 40,035 points.<\/p>\n<p>The government also plans to ensure that the country\u2019s seven operators are at least 15% locally owned, information technology and communications minister Bruno Kone said, as reported by Reuters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWithin six months we will take stock of our agreements, our commercial agreements, technical agreements and financial agreements of all the operators with the state regulator of Ivory Coast,\u201d Kone said during a visit to telcoms operator MTN in Abidjan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can tell you already, the head of state is encouraging us, instructing us even, to shut down all operators not up to date,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Five telecoms firm in Ghana were fined a total amount of GHS900,000 by the NCA, with MTN Ghana and Glo Ghana deemed the worst offenders, with the Business &amp; Financial citing offenses including call set up time, congestion and signalling traffic.<\/p>\n<p>In March the NCA pointed to 26.47 million subscribers in Ghana, with MTN accounting for close on half, at 12,024 million.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_37331\" style=\"width: 458px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/MTN-intraday-7-May-2013.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-37331\" class=\"size-full wp-image-37331\" alt=\"MTN intraday 7 May 2013\" src=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/MTN-intraday-7-May-2013.png\" width=\"448\" height=\"476\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/MTN-intraday-7-May-2013.png 448w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/MTN-intraday-7-May-2013-282x300.png 282w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 448px) 100vw, 448px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-37331\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">MTN intraday trade, 7 May 2013<\/p><\/div>\n<p>However, operators in the country have been at loggerheads with the national regulator over the past while.
