South African motorists are set to spend less on new cars in 2020 as many will likely hold onto their older models for longer in an uncertain time, amid a difficult economic climate.<\/p>\n

This is the view of WesBank chief executive, Chris de Kock, who said that 2020 is expected to be another challenging year for the motor industry, driven by low demand from both the retail and corporate market.<\/p>\n

De Kock said that affordability remains the number one factor influencing new car buying decisions in South African households.<\/p>\n

This aligns with data<\/a> <\/strong>from credit bureau TransUnion which shows that petrol price changes, interest rate changes, slower price increases, dealer incentives and lower inflation aren\u2019t driving consumers to buy new vehicles<\/p>\n

It added that consumers are still opting for entry-level vehicles with an average loan size below R200,000.<\/p>\n
