{"id":374310,"date":"2020-02-14T11:47:24","date_gmt":"2020-02-14T09:47:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=374310"},"modified":"2020-02-14T11:51:35","modified_gmt":"2020-02-14T09:51:35","slug":"new-draft-laws-show-how-much-cannabis-you-can-keep-for-personal-use-in-south-africa-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/lifestyle\/374310\/new-draft-laws-show-how-much-cannabis-you-can-keep-for-personal-use-in-south-africa-report\/","title":{"rendered":"New draft law shows how much cannabis you can keep for personal use in South Africa: report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Ministry of Justice has drafted a new bill which provides guidelines as to how much cannabis people can grow and possess in South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/mg.co.za\/article\/2020-02-14-no-legal-sales-in-new-cannabis-bill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mail &amp; Guardian<\/a> <\/strong>reports that the bill was developed in response to the Constitutional Court judgement in September 2018 that ended the ban on private cannabis use.<\/p>\n<p>The draft bill &#8211; which has not been publicly released &#8211; states that South Africans will be allowed to possess up to <strong>600g of dried cannabis<\/strong> in the privacy of their homes for personal use.<\/p>\n<p>However, they will be <strong>prevented from selling the drug<\/strong> &#8211; either recreationally or for medicinal uses.<\/p>\n<p>The draft document was reportedly sent to the national director of public prosecutions, the department of health, treasury, and other stakeholders in October 2019 with a deadline set for the end of January 2020.<\/p>\n<p>It should be noted that the details of this legislation may still change and that it will still have undergo a public consultation period at a later date.<\/p>\n<p>The government has until September 2020 to bring legislation on cannabis in line with the Constitution.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hemp regulations\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The government also <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/374132\/sa-government-to-regulate-commercial-use-of-hemp-products\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">plans <\/a><\/strong>to open up and regulate the commercial use of hemp products, providing opportunities for small-scale farmers, President Cyril Ramaphosa said in his State of the Nation address on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Ramaphosa said government will formulate policy on the use of cannabis products for medicinal purposes, to \u201cbuild this industry in line with global trends\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe regulatory steps will soon be announced by the relevant ministers,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He reiterated that agriculture is one of the industries with the greatest potential for growth.<\/p>\n<p>The Eastern Cape Government has also indicated that it plans to build a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business\/373748\/south-africa-wants-to-build-a-cannabis-college\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cannabis college<\/a><\/strong> as a means of creating jobs in the impoverished province.<\/p>\n<p>The training facility will upskill farmers in the growing and distribution of cannabis, and will assist with seed, fertilisers and fencing.<\/p>\n<p>It is set to be built in the Ingquza Hill Local Municipality in Lusisiki, picked because of its ideal growing conditions.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Read: <a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business\/373748\/south-africa-wants-to-build-a-cannabis-college\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">South Africa wants to build a cannabis college<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Ministry of Justice has drafted a new bill which provides guidelines as to how much cannabis people can grow and possess.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":10,"featured_media":147897,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[9876],"tags":[26],"class_list":["post-374310","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-lifestyle","tag-headline"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/374310","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/10"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=374310"}],"version-history":[{"count":10,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/374310\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":374330,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/374310\/revisions\/374330"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/147897"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=374310"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=374310"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=374310"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
