{"id":376729,"date":"2020-02-25T10:24:40","date_gmt":"2020-02-25T08:24:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=376729"},"modified":"2020-02-25T14:35:02","modified_gmt":"2020-02-25T12:35:02","slug":"heres-why-soweto-residents-say-they-wont-pay-for-electricity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/energy\/376729\/heres-why-soweto-residents-say-they-wont-pay-for-electricity\/","title":{"rendered":"Here&#8217;s why Soweto residents say they won&#8217;t pay for electricity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Gauteng is facing a provincial <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/376593\/massive-gauteng-shutdown-over-unpaid-electricity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">shutdown<\/a> <\/strong>as thousands of protesters take to the streets demanding free electricity, housing and land.<\/p>\n<p>Key to the demands is the issue of free electricity, with Soweto residents arguing that Eskom does not have a right to cut off power to the township due to non-payment.<\/p>\n<p>Households across South Africa owe Eskom around R40 billion in unpaid bills \u2013 but it\u2019s\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/mg.co.za\/article\/2019-10-18-00-why-we-dont-pay-for-power\">Soweto, with its 1.3 million residents<\/a><\/strong>, that accounts for the biggest chunk.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking in an interview with <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.capetalk.co.za\/articles\/376025\/why-soweto-feels-it-doesn-t-have-to-pay-eskom-when-the-rest-of-south-africa-does\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cape Talk<\/a><\/strong>, Soweto Electricity Crisis committee member Trevor Ngwane said that Eskom is using &#8216;bullying tactics&#8217; against working-class communities by using load shedding as a &#8216;scapegoat against the poor&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>He added that low-paying communities such as Soweto were being treated unfairly by the power utility.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;To be honest in Soweto more are not paying than those who are paying,&#8221; he said. &#8220;However, it&#8217;s not that they are not paying but they cannot keep up with the high tariffs in the country.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The difference between us and the rest of the country is that we are fighting (the issue), we are defending our grannies and defending the vulnerable.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Ngwane said that pensioners should be spending their money on their grandchildren and their own needs, but are being forced to make a choice between electricity and putting food on the table.<\/p>\n<p>He said that Eskom used these vulnerable people as a &#8216;scapegoat&#8217; for non-payment despite the fact they cannot afford to pay.<\/p>\n<p>When pushed as to why Soweto residents don&#8217;t pay while the rest of the country does, Ngwane said it&#8217;s because the township&#8217;s residents have &#8216;fighting spirit&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They won&#8217;t allow themselves to be bullied. If you don&#8217;t fight they will trample on you.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Electricity and water are basic necessities which every human being should have access to.
