{"id":37733,"date":"2013-05-14T03:31:47","date_gmt":"2013-05-14T01:31:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=37733"},"modified":"2013-05-14T14:54:05","modified_gmt":"2013-05-14T12:54:05","slug":"which-banking-ceos-earn-the-highest-salary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/banking\/37733\/which-banking-ceos-earn-the-highest-salary\/","title":{"rendered":"Which banking CEO earns the highest salary?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With the remuneration of blue-chip financial institutions constantly under the microscope due to the precarious state of the global economy, BusinessTech takes a snapshot of the salaries of South Africa\u2019s top five banking firms, including FNB, Standard Bank, Absa, Capitec, and Nedbank.<\/p>\n<p><strong>FNB<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Michael Jordaan\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/2582-Michael-Jordaan\">Michael Jordaan<\/a>, CEO of First National Bank (<a title=\"FNB\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1730-FNB-First-National-Bank\">FNB<\/a>) pocketed R17.089 million in 2012, up from R14.787 million in 2011.<\/p>\n<p>Jordaan\u2019s cash package totalled R4.604 million, with performance related incentives and share awards totalling R11.52 million.<\/p>\n<p>Chief executive of <a title=\"FirstRand\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/4813-First-Rand\">FirstRand<\/a>, the holding company of FNB, <a title=\"Sizwe Nxasana\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/8477-Sizwe-Nxasana\">Sizwe Nxasana<\/a> was paid R22.48 million in 2012, including a performance related bonus of R9.6 million, and up from R19.58 million in 2011.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Absa<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Absa Group\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1877-Absa-Bank\">Absa Group<\/a> chief executive <a title=\"Maria Ramos\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/2316-Maria-Ramos\">Maria Ramos<\/a> did not receive an increase in fixed remuneration during 2012 following the bank\u2019s \u201cdisappointing\u201d earnings last year.<\/p>\n<p>Ramos was paid a basic salary of R6.07 million, along with a pension of R492,593, and additional benefits amounting to R99,488.<\/p>\n<p>Ramos was also awarded R10 million as part of a long-term incentive plan, taking her total remuneration to R16.658 million.<\/p>\n<p>Ramos was paid R20.7 million in 2011, including deferred awards of R14 million.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Absa-Executive-pay.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-37732\" alt=\"Absa Executive pay\" src=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Absa-Executive-pay.png\" width=\"599\" height=\"144\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Standard Bank<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Jacko Maree\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/2310-Jacko-Maree\">Jacko Maree<\/a>, who stepped down as CEO of <a title=\"Standard Bank\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/2385-Standard-Bank\">Standard Bank<\/a> in March, took home R18.01 million in 2012, including R6.35 million in cash, but well off the amount of R27.24 million he pocketed in 2011, which included a deferred bonus of R9.04 million, and a cash award of R8.78 million.<\/p>\n<p>Standard Bank took the rather unusual approach of appointing to joint CEOs to replace Maree, in <a title=\"Ben Kruger\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/8478-Ben-Kruger\">Ben Kruger<\/a> and <a title=\"Sim Tshabalala\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/8479-Sim-Tshabalala\">Sim Tshabalala<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In 2011, Kruger earned R28.04 million, with Tshabalala taking home R23.99 million.
