{"id":37923,"date":"2013-05-16T03:45:25","date_gmt":"2013-05-16T01:45:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=37923"},"modified":"2013-05-16T09:36:35","modified_gmt":"2013-05-16T07:36:35","slug":"mtns-political-sponsorship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/mobile\/37923\/mtns-political-sponsorship\/","title":{"rendered":"MTN&#8217;s political sponsorship"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Mobile operator <a title=\"MTN\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1640-MTN-Group\">MTN<\/a> says it has not yet taken a decision on whether to provide donations to political parties in the run up to the South African general election of 2014, having done so in the 2009 campaign.<\/p>\n<p>It follows an admission by listed brewer, <a title=\"SABMiller\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/5922-SAB-Miller\">SABMiller<\/a>, that it will donate R9 million to six political parties leading up to 2014.<\/p>\n<p>The political parties include the <a title=\"African National Congress\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/2387-ANC-African-National-Congress\">African National Congress<\/a>, the <a title=\"Democratic Alliance\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1696-DA-Democratic-Alliance\">Democratic Alliance<\/a>, the <a title=\"Congress of the People\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/8524-Congress-of-the-People\">Congress of the People<\/a>, the Inkatha Freedom Party, the United Democratic Movement and the Freedom Front Plus.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Political progress will remain vital to the country\u2019s continued stability and growth but this progress requires funding and significant human resources. This is an extremely important cause and it deserves our support,&#8221; said SABMiller executive chairman <a title=\"Graham Mackay\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/8525-Graham-Mackay\">Graham Mackay<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>MTN group chief HR &amp; corporate affairs officer, <a title=\"Paul Norman\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/6161-Paul-Norman\">Paul Norman<\/a>, told BusinessTech:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;In 2009, MTN approved an allocation of funding for political parties in relation to the general elections in South Africa of approximately R13 million. MTN&#8217;s policy on distribution is adapted from the Independent Electoral Commission&#8217;s distribution model.
