Broadband Infraco and the provincial government of Limpopo Province have partnered to make major network upgrades in the Limpopo and Mpumalanga provinces.<\/p>\n
According to Broadband Infraco CEO Puleng\u00a0Kwele, the company is investing in upgrading its telecoms infrastructure in its Northern Ring Capacity Upgrade Project, which will cover both Limpopo and Mpumalanga provinces.<\/p>\n
The project aims to deploy 40Gbps technology in the Northern Ring for transmission of telecoms services over fibre.<\/p>\n
The new link will run parallel to the already-existing 10Gbps link, and will be scalable in multiples of 40Gbps to address current and future capacity requirements, the company said.<\/p>\n
“We are very excited to work with the Limpopo Province, renowned for its pioneering work in rolling out its Information Society and Knowledge Economy development roadmap,”\u00a0said Kwele.<\/p>\n
The new public-to-public partnership with the Limpopo provincial government will facilitate the deployment of the Limpopo broadband network, the company said.<\/p>\n
Currently, the total capacity in the Northern Ring is at 160Gbps; once the project is completed, the Northern Ring capacity will be boosted to 480Gbps.<\/p>\n
The Northern Ring extends from Gauteng to Polokwane via Soekmekaar and Tzaneen towards Hoedspruit then Nelspruit. The ring closes from Nelspruit to Pretoria, via Ngodwana, Belfast and Witbank.<\/p>\n
“The project has been approved by the Broadband Infraco board and the procurement processes have been completed with the contract being awarded to a contractor to supply and install the equipment,” Kwele said.<\/p>\n
“R700 million of Capital Infrastructure is committed for the current financial year to be expended on various capital programmes including the Northern Ring.”<\/p>\n
Phase 1 of the projected is expected to be completed at the end of June 2013, while phase 2 is expected to be completed at the end of August 2013.<\/p>\n
