Inrix has published its Global Traffic Scorecard for 2019 highlighting those cities that struggle the most when it comes to traffic congestion, including 10 cities in South Africa.<\/p>\n

The location-based data and analytics firm said it analyzed and ranked the impact of traffic congestion in seven continents, 43 countries, and included 975 cities.<\/p>\n

Bogota topped the list of the cities most impacted by traffic congestion with drivers losing 191 hours a year to congestion, followed by Rio de Janeiro (190 hours), Mexico City (158 hours) and Istanbul (150 hours).<\/p>\n

Latin American and European cities again dominated the Top 10, highlighting the rapid urbanisation occurring in Latin America and historic European cities that took shape long before the age of automobile, Inrix said.<\/p>\n

The findings show, on average, Brits wasted 115 hours in congestion in 2019, costing the country \u00a36.9 billion in 2019, an average of \u00a3894 per driver.<\/p>\n

London ranked as the most congested city in the country where the average commuter sat idle for 149 hours per year to congestion. Across the capital, the total damage to the economy exceeded \u00a34.9bn. Belfast (112 hours), Bristol (103 hours), Edinburgh (98 hours) and Manchester (92 hours) complete the top five.<\/p>\n

For the second consecutive year, Boston ranked as the most congested city in the US with the average commuter in the metro area losing 149 hours per year to congestion, costing $2,205 per driver in time lost. Chicago (145 hours, $2,059 lost), Philadelphia (142 hours, $2,016 lost), New York City (140 hours, $1,988 lost) and Washington D.C. (124 hours, $1,761 lost) rounded out the Top 5.<\/p>\n

Inrix found that Cape Town remains the most congested city in the country, ranking 29th globally, and showing a year-on-year change of 7%, while Johannesburg was econd, ranked 71st globally. (Pretoria 101st), was third.<\/p>\n

The data showed that Capetonians can expect to lose 124 hours in traffic annually, far more than in Joburg (71 hours), and Pretoria (65 hours).<\/p>\n

In January, data from mapping provider Tom Tom<\/a> indicated that Cairo in Egypt is the most congested city on the African continent, with Cape Town named as the city with the worst traffic in the country (101st), followed by Johannesburg (121st) and Pretoria (207th).<\/p>\n

Tom Tom estimates that drivers in Cape Town and Johannesburg will both spend an average of 20-21 extra minutes per 30 minute<\/span> trip in the morning stuck in traffic.<\/p>\n

You can likewise expect to spend an extra 20 minutes per 30 minute<\/span> trip in the evening.<\/p>\n

This is roughly the equivalent of six days and 10 hours lost to traffic every year, Tom Tom said.<\/p>\n
