New research finds that more than half of internet-using teens in the US have decided not to post\u00a0content online over reputation concerns.<\/p>\n
A survey of 802 teens (12-17) conducted by\u00a0Pew Research Center<\/a> found that 57% of teens who are online\u00a0have decided not to post something online because they\u00a0were concerned it would reflect badly on them in the future.<\/p>\n While sports stars, celebrities, and other adults are\u00a0constantly\u00a0apologising for their\u00a0misbehavior\u00a0on Twitter<\/a> and other social media platforms, the research found\u00a0that younger\u00a0social media users are more likely\u00a0than other online teens who do not use social media to say they have refrained from sharing content\u00a0due to the future impact it might have on their reputation (61% vs. 39%).<\/p>\n The oldest youth\u2014online teens ages 16 and 17\u2014are more likely than younger teens to say that they\u2019ve\u00a0decided not to post content online over concerns about how it will reflect on them; 67% of online teens ages 16-17 say they have withheld content, compared with 52% of 14-15 year-olds.<\/p>\n According to Pew, some teens find themselves in the role of policing or advising their friends when they post sensitive or\u00a0personal information online.<\/p>\n \u201cI had a friend that was\u00a0always putting his personal info on Facebook<\/a>, and I told him that certain info shouldn\u2019t be\u00a0shared with\u00a0everyone,\u201d on respondent said.<\/p>\n Another respondent described her friend\u2019s reaction to her comment about the personal nature of her friend\u2019s posts: \u201cI did do\u00a0that – I told someone they were sharing too much stuff, [and] they defriended me for a season.\u201d<\/p>\n Twitter vs Facebook<\/strong><\/p>\n Teen Twitter use has grown significantly, according to\u00a0Pew Research Center.<\/p>\n “Twitter draws a far smaller crowd than Facebook for teens, but its use is rising. One in four online teens uses Twitter in some way.
