{"id":38551,"date":"2013-05-23T17:50:55","date_gmt":"2013-05-23T15:50:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=38551"},"modified":"2013-05-23T17:52:22","modified_gmt":"2013-05-23T15:52:22","slug":"interest-rates-unchanged","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/trending\/38551\/interest-rates-unchanged\/","title":{"rendered":"Interest rates unchanged"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The repo rate remains unchanged at 5%, the SA Reserve Bank announced on Thursday (23 May).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The [Monetary Policy Committee] is increasingly concerned about the deteriorating outlook for the South African economy,&#8221; said SARB governor Gill Marcus, announcing the rate.<\/p>\n<p>Risks going into the future included inflation being &#8220;on the upside&#8221;, difficult labour relations and increased wage settlements, higher electricity prices, and a volatile rand.<\/p>\n<p>Year-on-year inflation as measured by the consumer price index (CPI) for all urban areas was 5.9% in April 2013, unchanged from the previous two months.<\/p>\n<p>But the drivers of the overall rate had changed.<\/p>\n<p>Food price inflation measured 6.3% in April, reversing the downward trend that had prevailed since November 2012.<\/p>\n<p>The contribution of food to overall inflation remained unchanged at 0.9%, while housing and utilities contributed 1.4%.<\/p>\n<p>Administered prices increased by 8.9%, and by 7.8% excluding petrol.<\/p>\n<p>Core inflation, which excludes food, petrol, and electricity, measured 5.2%, marginally up from 5.1% in March.<\/p>\n<p>The headline producer price inflation for final manufactured goods measured 5.7% in March, up from 5.4% in February.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus said data indicated that mining production was increasing but output was contracting and &#8220;looking bleak&#8221;, manufacturing had declined, household consumption was low, retail sales had contracted month on month for March, and unsecured lending for households was still high.<\/p>\n<p>The United States and European economies were still uncertain.<\/p>\n<p>Globally, any buoyant conditions or &#8220;excessive liquidity&#8221; seen at present, should be considered a &#8220;bubble&#8221;, not positive growth.<\/p>\n<p>The country&#8217;s major banks customarily linked their prime lending rate to changes in the repo rate and, if also unchanged, would be at 8.5%.<\/p>\n<p>Nedbank confirmed that its rate would remained unchanged.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Nedbank has announced that there will therefore be no change to their current prime overdraft rate, the vehicle and asset finance rate, and the mortgage rate applicable to home loans,&#8221; the company said.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">More on the SARB<\/h3>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The repo rate remains unchanged at 5%, the SA Reserve Bank announced on Thursday.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":4,"featured_media":8110,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[25,1492,1799,2760,3619],"class_list":["post-38551","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-trending","tag-active","tag-gill-marcus","tag-nedbank","tag-sa-reserve-bank","tag-sarb"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/38551","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/4"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=38551"}],"version-history":[{"count":3,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/38551\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":38553,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/38551\/revisions\/38553"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/8110"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=38551"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=38551"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=38551"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
