FNB says that its banking app development is driven by demand – and with only an estimated 200,000 Windows Phone devices currently being used in South Africa, there may be quite a wait.<\/p>\n

In June 2012, it was reported that FNB was developing a dedicated banking app for the Windows Phone 7 platform. In September 2012, the bank then said that it would look at developing the app for Windows Phone 8, instead.<\/p>\n

While FNB has since launched its app on the Windows 8 platform (for tablet and PC), the bank has yet to release a dedicated application for use on Windows Phone devices.<\/p>\n

When asked when a Windows Phone 8 version of the FNB banking app would become available, head of FNB Connect ISP and Business Operations, Farren Roper gave no indication that one was currently in development – however, he did say that it was not “off the cards”.<\/p>\n

“We have a very rigorous development cycle that is determined by client demand. Once the demand is there, we will consider it,” Roper said.<\/p>\n

Windows Phone in SA<\/h3>\n

In South Africa, the number of Windows Phone 8 devices is currently dwarfed by all other major operating systems.<\/p>\n

According to World Wide Worx MD, Arthur Goldstuck, there are only an estimated 200,000 Windows Phone devices being used – and not all of those are Windows Phone 8 devices.<\/p>\n

This is in stark contrast to the millions of Blackberry, iOS and Android smartphones in use in South Africa.<\/p>\n

“We are confident that we cater for the large majority of the South African market,” Roper said. “With our in house development team, nothing is off the cards – but once again I would like to reiterate that our development is driven by demand.”<\/p>\n

FNB’s dedicated banking app is currently available for both smartphones and tablets. The app is compatible with iOS, BlackBerry and Android smartphones, as well as iOS, Android and Windows 8 tablets.<\/p>\n
