{"id":38818,"date":"2013-05-28T16:13:34","date_gmt":"2013-05-28T14:13:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=38818"},"modified":"2013-05-28T16:15:33","modified_gmt":"2013-05-28T14:15:33","slug":"no-e-tolls-the-protest-song","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/38818\/no-e-tolls-the-protest-song\/","title":{"rendered":"No e-tolls: the protest song"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Local musician Greg Georgiades has written a song protesting against the implementation of\u00a0e-tolls\u00a0on Gauteng highways.<\/p>\n<p>The song, &#8220;NO E-TOLL!&#8221; has been posted on Youtube by Opposition to Urban Tolling Alliance (Outa).<\/p>\n<p>According to Outa,\u00a0it did not commission Georgiades\u00a0to write this song. &#8220;He did it for the cause.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Song lyrics:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>No e-toll, you take the breath from us, stealing our lives away<br \/>\nNo e-toll, you take the breath from us, stealing our lives away<br \/>\nNo e-toll, you take the breath from us, stealing our lives away<br \/>\nNo e-toll, you take the breath from us, stealing our lives away<\/p>\n<p>They tax you when you&#8217;re born, they tax you when you die,<br \/>\nThey tax you in between, they&#8217;re certainly not shy.<br \/>\nThey tax you for your time, they tax you for your space,<br \/>\nThey tax you for being in the human race.<\/p>\n<p>But it doesn\u2019t quite stop there, you\u2019ll find it all around,<br \/>\nHigh up in the air down here on the ground,<br \/>\nThey tax you when you walk, till you can only crawl<br \/>\nThere\u2019s a tax for freedom, there\u2019s nothing left at all.<\/p>\n<p>Repeat chorus<br \/>\nNo e-toll, you take the breath from us, stealing our lives away<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/HQZyfcodbUs?rel=0\" height=\"338\" width=\"600\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The implementation of e-tolls on Gauteng highways is imminent, the transport department and the national roads agency warned on Sunday (26 May).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are a few steps left in this process, but the implementation of the e-toll system is well on its way,\u201d SA National Roads Agency (Sanral) head Nazir Alli said in a statement issued with the transport department.<\/p>\n<p>The e-tolls have been heavily criticised by a number of organisations, including the Congress of SA Trade Unions (Cosatu).<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Democratic\u00a0Alliance (DA),\u00a0\u00a0said the e-toll issue would affect the African National Congress in the 2014 general elections.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe e-tolls will be a fiercely-contested election issue that will cost the ANC badly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Friday (24 May), draft regulations and notices were published in the Government Gazette detailing how the tolls will work. The regulations also proposed\u00a0a reduction of a R550 cap by R100 per month to R450 for cars (Class A2).<\/p>\n<p>Wayne Duvenage, chairperson of Outa, questioned how SA National Roads Agency (Sanral)\u00a0arrived at its latest reduction proposal.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">More on e-tolls<\/h3>\n<p><a title=\"E-toll tariff reduction?
