Former chief executive of\u00a0MTN Group<\/a>,\u00a0Phuthuma Nhleko<\/a>\u00a0has rejoined the group as its chairman with effect from 29 May 2013, following the official resignation of\u00a0Cyril Ramaphosa<\/a> in March.<\/p>\n

Nhleko stepped down as CEO of MTN Group at the end of March 2011, having been appointed in 2002, with Sifiso Dabengwa<\/a> taking over his role.<\/p>\n

His appointment as chairman of the company was confirmed at MTN’s\u00a0annual general meeting on Tuesday (28 May).<\/p>\n

Ramaphosa stepped down from his position as a non-executive director and chairman of the mobile operator due to\u00a0his election to the position of ANC<\/a> deputy president at the ANC\u2019s 53rd National Conference in Mangaung.<\/p>\n

Ramaphosa was appointed to the MTN board in October 2001 and had served as chairman of the MTN Board since 2002. He was also chairman of the nominations committee as well as a member of the remuneration and human resources committee.<\/p>\n

“The board welcomes the appointment of Mr Nhleko who previously served as a non-
\nexecutive director and chairman of MTN from July 2001 until June 2002 and thereafter as\u00a0an executive director as well as group president and CEO until March 2011,” MTN said in a statement on Tuesday (28 May).<\/p>\n

“It is the board\u00b4s\u00a0belief that Mr Nhleko\u00b4s previous association with MTN and his experience in the\u00a0telecommunications industry will benefit the group,” it said.<\/p>\n
