{"id":38851,"date":"2013-05-29T07:04:18","date_gmt":"2013-05-29T05:04:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=38851"},"modified":"2013-05-29T09:06:55","modified_gmt":"2013-05-29T07:06:55","slug":"mtn-courting-india-acquisition-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/telecommunications\/38851\/mtn-courting-india-acquisition-report\/","title":{"rendered":"MTN courting India acquisition: report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a title=\"MTN Group (MTN)\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1640-MTN-Group\">MTN Group<\/a>\u00a0is believed to be sniffing out a potential acquisition in India with\u00a0<a title=\"Reliance Communications\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/8708-Reliance-Communications\">Reliance Communications<\/a>, the\u00a0company\u00a0it tried unsuccessfully to merge with in 2008, according to Bloomberg.<\/p>\n<p>Reliance Communications, which is owned by billionaire <a title=\"Anil Ambani\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/8709-Anil-Ambani\">Anil Ambani<\/a>,\u00a0boasts a customer base of over 130 million, including\u00a07.2 million 3G customers and 29.4 million data customers.<\/p>\n<p>MTN is the third biggest company in South Africa according to Forbes\u2019 list of 2000 biggest companies in the world, ranking 345th, overall.<\/p>\n<p>Bloomberg said that MTN is\u00a0evaluating assets in India with Reliance a possible target, citing four people familiar with the matter. However, the media group noted that\u00a0Ambani is unlikely to walk away from Reliance, &#8220;which makes an outright takeover less probable,&#8221; one source said.<\/p>\n<p>And while MTN &#8211; as is customary for the group &#8211; said it could not comment on speculation, Bloomberg noted that a\u00a0successful deal would give the group its first major foothold in Asia, having also tried, unsuccessfully, to merge with <a title=\"Bharti Airtel\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1917-Airtel\">Bharti Airtel<\/a> in a deal worth $24 billion, in 2009.<\/p>\n<p>MTN could \u201cquite comfortably\u201d fund an acquisition with debt and its own cash, <a title=\"Bruce Main\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/8710-Bruce-Main\">Bruce Main<\/a>, a fund manager at <a title=\"Ivy Asset Management\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/8711-Ivy-Asset-Management\">Ivy Asset Management<\/a> told Bloomberg. An obstacle would be \u201cthe competitive environment in India, which is so aggressive that the main mobile operators started slashing margins substantially.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Shares in MTN declined a fraction (0.13%) in trade on the JSE on Tuesday, a day which saw South Africa&#8217;s All Share Index add 1.3% to\u00a041,971 points.<\/p>\n<p>However, at R181.75, MTN is valued at R342.04 billion and is the continent&#8217;s largest mobile operator with close on 200 million subscribers, and positioned in 22 countries in\u00a0Africa and the Middle East.<\/p>\n<p>In April,\u00a0MTN said it could spend up to $8 billion on an acquisition and is looking for targets on the continent, the Middle East and Southeast Asia.<\/p>\n<p>The group is one of 12 operators\u00a0bidding for one of two telecommunication licenses in\u00a0Myanmar, and is also\u00a0believed to be vying for a 53% stake in <a title=\"Maroc Telecom\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/8103-Maroc-Telecom\">Maroc Telecom<\/a>, currently held by France-based <a title=\"Vivendi S.A\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/8104-Vivendi-S-A\">Vivendi S.A<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday (28 May), the group announced that former chief executive\u00a0<a title=\"Phuthuma Nhleko\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1644-Phuthuma-Nhleko\">Phuthuma Nhleko<\/a>\u00a0had rejoined the group as its chairman, following the official resignation of\u00a0Cyril Ramaphosa in March.<\/p>\n<p>Nhleko stepped down as CEO of MTN Group at the end of March 2011, having been appointed in 2002, with <a title=\"Sifiso Dabengwa\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/1729-Sifiso-Dabengwa\">Sifiso Dabengwa<\/a> taking over his role.<\/p>\n<p>In an annual general\u00a0meeting on Tuesday, Dabengwa told board members that the group continues to focus on broadening its offering, providing more services to customers by moving into the digital space, leveraging MTN\u00b4s inherent strength in adjacent industries, creating a distinct customer experience and transforming its operating model.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We expect to deliver improved organic growth in both revenue and ebitda in 2013 and anticipate
