{"id":391837,"date":"2020-04-22T20:38:24","date_gmt":"2020-04-22T18:38:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=391837"},"modified":"2020-04-22T20:45:23","modified_gmt":"2020-04-22T18:45:23","slug":"3635-confirmed-coronavirus-cases-in-south-africa-with-65-deaths","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/391837\/3635-confirmed-coronavirus-cases-in-south-africa-with-65-deaths\/","title":{"rendered":"3,635 confirmed coronavirus cases in South Africa &#8211; with 65 deaths"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Health minister Zweli Mkhize has confirmed that there are now 3,635 positive Covid-19 cases in South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>This is up from 3,465 Covid-19 cases announced on Tuesday by the minister, meaning a rise of 170 cases over the past 24-hours.<\/p>\n<p>Mkhize also confirmed that seven more people have died from the coronavirus, bringing the total number of deaths to 65.<\/p>\n<p>The total number of tests conducted to date is 133,774, of which 6,868 were conducted in the last 24 hours.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">As at today the total number of confirmed <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/COVID19?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#COVID19<\/a> cases are 3635 and the total number of deaths now stands at 65. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/SbaYL29fbY\">pic.twitter.com\/SbaYL29fbY<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Dr Zweli Mkhize (@DrZweliMkhize) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DrZweliMkhize\/status\/1253029223536766977?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 22, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Globally, coronavirus cases approached 1.6 million infections, while deaths neared 180,000 and recoveries moved past 705,000 people.<\/p>\n<p>BioNTech SE and Pfizer Inc said the German regulatory authority, the Paul-Ehrlich-Institut, has approved the Phase 1\/2 clinical trial for BioNTech\u2019s BNT162 vaccine programme. The companies are jointly developing BNT162, Bloomberg reported.<\/p>\n<p>The trial is the first clinical trial of a Covid-19 vaccine candidate to start in Germany, the companies said, and is part of a global development programme. Pfizer and BioNTech will also conduct trials for BNT162 in the US upon regulatory approval, expected shortly.<\/p>\n<p>The Chinese ambassador to the US meanwhile, called for a \u201cserious rethinking\u201d of relations between the world\u2019s biggest economies in the face of the pandemic.
