{"id":392497,"date":"2020-04-24T12:17:22","date_gmt":"2020-04-24T10:17:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=392497"},"modified":"2020-04-24T12:17:22","modified_gmt":"2020-04-24T10:17:22","slug":"changes-in-food-prices-during-south-africas-lockdown-heres-what-you-are-paying-more-for","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/finance\/392497\/changes-in-food-prices-during-south-africas-lockdown-heres-what-you-are-paying-more-for\/","title":{"rendered":"Changes in food prices during South Africa&#8217;s lockdown &#8211; here&#8217;s what you are paying more for"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>StatsSA has published new data highlighting the price changes for those essential goods that appear in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) basket.<\/p>\n<p>The organisation said it is temporarily publishing inflation data on a weekly basis, albeit for a smaller range of goods.<\/p>\n<p>Its data shows that the prices of essential products increased on average by 0.3% between the week ending 2 April (first week of lockdown) and the week ending 16 April (the third week of lockdown).<\/p>\n<p>The second week of the lockdown saw the prices of essential items increase by 0.5% week-on-week, followed by a decrease of 0.2% week-on-week in the third week.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Stats-1-scaled.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-392501 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Stats-1-1024x456.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"840\" height=\"374\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Stats-1-1024x456.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Stats-1-300x134.jpg 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Stats-1-768x342.jpg 768w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Stats-1-1536x684.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Stats-1-2048x911.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Stats-1-1200x534.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 840px) 100vw, 840px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Food and non-alcoholic beverages (NAB) prices &#8211; which comprise almost 90% of the index &#8211; increased by 0.4% over the two weeks.<\/p>\n<p>This is equivalent to the average monthly change in the CPI Food and NAB index over the past six months to March 2020, Stats SA said.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Food-scaled.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-392503 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Food-1024x622.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"840\" height=\"510\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Food-1024x622.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Food-300x182.jpg 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Food-768x467.jpg 768w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Food-1536x933.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Food-2048x1244.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Food-1200x729.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 840px) 100vw, 840px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Some of the notable increases and decreases between 2- 16 April include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Milk, eggs and cheese increased by 2.9%. This was mainly caused by a 19% increase in the prices of eggs;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Hot beverages increased by 2.7%.\u00a0 Increases of 2.8% for instant coffee and 7.2% for black tea pushed the hot beverages index higher.
