Trump (@realDonaldTrump) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/realDonaldTrump\/status\/1255352014042738688?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 29, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><strong>Back to school<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Director-general for Basic Education, Hubert Mathanzima Mweli says that schools could open as early as 4 May for teachers, before learners return on Monday, 6 May under a phased approach, beginning with grades 7-12.<\/p>\n<p>Mweli stressed that these dates are tentative and are subject to<span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-1qd0xha r-ad9z0x r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\"> change as part of a draft amended school calendar. <\/span>He was speaking as part of a Department of Basic Education update on the status of schooling during the Covid-19 Lockdown.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"post-text\">The director-general listed a number of non-negotiable pre-conditions for the reopening of schools. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"post-text\">The list included water and sanitation, Covid-19 essentials, cleaners, screeners, additional teaching posts to avoid overcrowding, the provision of mobile classrooms, and the introduction of \u201cincubation camps\u201d for \u201cprogressed and weaker (Grade 12) learners\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Additional pre-conditions for resuming learning activity includes safe transport for learners and employers; screening of learners and employees on entering institutions; prevention of viral spread; cleaning of surfaces and shared equipment; and good ventilation.<\/p>\n<p>Learners will be required to wear face masks, along with all staff. Each learner will be supplied with three face masks.<\/p>\n<p>Proposed return dates for learners are as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Grade 7 and Grade 12 \u2013 <strong>06 May<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Grade 6 and Grade 11 \u2013 <strong>20 May<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Grade 5 and Grade 10 \u2013 <strong>03 June<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Grade 4 and Grade 9 \u2013 <strong>17 June<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Grade 3 and Grade 8 \u2013 0<strong>1 July<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Grade 1 and Grade 2 \u2013 <strong>08 July<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Grade R \u2013 <strong>15 July<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The new school calendar for learners is proposed as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Term 2 \u2013<\/strong> 6 May to 26 July<\/li>\n<li><strong>Term 3 \u2013 <\/strong>\u00a03 August to 23 September<\/li>\n<li><strong>Term 4 \u2013<\/strong>\u00a0 28 September to 9 December<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The DG sated that June exams will be cancelled with the school year likely to end later \u2013 moving from 4 December to 9 December.
